Looking for motivation to get into reading? In our last post, we shared how reading can positively affect our bodies. Reading also has a healthy impact on our minds and relationships with others. Reading can help us deal with feelings of isolation and sadness. When we read, we indulge our imaginations and our minds go on an adventure alongside the protagonists. When we read fiction, we began to empathize with the emotions and struggles of the characters in the book. This empathy then translates to our interactions with people in the real world and can improve our social relationships.

Did you know that reading can be good for your mental and physical health? This week we’re sharing a few ways your body responds to reading a book. One great benefit reading has on our bodies is its effects on our blood pressure and heart rates. In 2009, the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and Seton Hall University conducted an experiment on health science students. Their goal was to measure the effects of yoga, humor, and reading on one’s stress levels. According to their research, the students felt less stressed (as proved by lower blood pressure and heart rates) after 30 minutes of reading. So the next time you find yourself feeling stressed, find a quiet place to rest and open a good book.

Having a fever is a common symptom of many illnesses. Fevers are usually an indication that your body is ‘battling’ a virus or infection. But when are fevers dangerous and when should you get help from a doctor? For babies and toddlers, seek out a doctor’s help if the fever reaches 100.4 F or higher. For adults, fevers over 102 degrees are high enough to cause harm if prolonged. If you can’t get the fever reduced at home, do not hesitate to call a professional. If the fever is accompanied by severe coughing, headache, stiff neck, diarrhea, and bleeding/bruising, seek immediate medical assistance.

Adolescence can be a difficult experience for many children but explaining the process is also difficult. Here are a few tips on how to prepare your pr***en for the changes that will take place over the next 8-10 years of their life. First, keep in mind that these changes can be exciting and stressful for a child so it is very important that they are made aware of what is considered normal and healthy. Explaining that their bodies will grow and develop quickly or slowly can help manage realistic expectations. If you aren’t sure you are able to answer their questions, feel free to get their personal care professionals involved. As their caregivers, you may notice that they have a greater desire for personal space, privacy, or independence. This is normal. The best way to support your child is to set age-appropriate boundaries that give them a sense of independence while reinforcing safe and parent-approved practices.
