PARENTS PLEASE EDUCATE YOUR CHILDREN. GROWING PROBLEM

Sextortion is a serious crime and a form of blackmail where an individual is coerced or threatened with the non-consensual release of n**e or sexually explicit images and videos unless they comply with demands for more sexual content, sexual favors, or money.
How Sextortion Occurs
Sextortionists, often operating in organized criminal gangs overseas, use various online platforms to find and groom victims. Common tactics include:
Catfishing: Perpetrators create fake online profiles, often pretending to be an attractive person or someone the same age as the victim, to build trust and a false sense of a romantic relationship.
Deception and Coercion: The criminal convinces the victim to send explicit images or to perform sexual acts during a video call, which they secretly record. They may send an explicit image first to encourage reciprocation.
Threats: Once they have the material, they threaten to share it with the victim's friends, family, school, or employer unless their demands are met. They may find personal information and contacts from the victim's social media profiles to make the threats more credible.
Financial Demands: In a growing trend, especially involving male victims, the primary motivation is money or gift cards, rather than additional images.
AI-Generated Content: Perpetrators may use digital-editing tools or AI to create fake explicit images or videos of the victim to use as leverage.
What to Do if You are a Victim
If you or someone you know is a victim, know that you are not to blame and help is available. Law enforcement and victim advocates recommend the following steps:
Stop all contact with the offender immediately. Block them on all platforms (social media, messaging apps, etc.).
Do not pay or send any more images. This rarely stops the demands and often makes the situation worse.
Save all evidence. Take screenshots of all communications (messages, profiles, usernames, etc.) but do not delete the actual conversations. This information is crucial for law enforcement.
Tell a trusted adult or authority figure. Shame and embarrassment are powerful tools for perpetrators, and silence allows the abuse to continue.
Report the crime to law enforcement and relevant support organizations.
Resources for Help
National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC): Report incidents via the NCMEC CyberTipline and use the Take It Down tool to potentially remove explicit images from the internet.
Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI): Report the crime to your local FBI office or online at tips.fbi.gov.
Homeland Security Investigations (HSI): Contact HSI at Assistance.Victim@ice.dhs.gov.
Helplines: The NCMEC provides support services and referrals, including their Team HOPE program which connects families with peers.

A form allowing the public to submit tips about Federal crimes to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Tips can be anonymous.
