We’re deeply grateful to share that Sorrel Leaf Healing Center has received $500,000 in funding from the Delores Barr Weaver Legacy Funds at the Community Foundation for Northeast Florida.

What makes this support especially meaningful is that this Foundation is not based in our region, yet they chose to invest in Humboldt County, recognizing the mental health needs of children and youth in our small, rural region, despite the distance.

This funding will allow us to start the build for our Movement Pavilion, a covered space essential for year-round restorative practices like yoga, meditation, and movement therapy, especially during Humboldt’s long, wet season. It will also support the hiring of key leadership roles and a refresh of our website and outreach materials, strengthening our ability to reach and serve families in need upon our opening this fall.

We are truly honored by the Foundation’s generosity and by their willingness to care deeply about communities far from their own. This support brings us one step closer to building sustainable, trauma-informed healing spaces for youth and children in Humboldt County.

We’re honored to share that the PG&E Corporation Foundation has awarded Sorrel Leaf Healing Center a $100,000 Nature Positive PG&E Grant!

This amazing support will help us restore our back acres’ meadow, riparian forest, and wetlands, a vital part of creating a truly healing environment for youth and community.

With this funding, we’ll be able to:
- Plant native species and bring biodiversity back to the land.
- Conduct riparian thinning and coppicing to support healthy growth.
- Continue pile and cultural burns rooted in traditional ecological knowledge.
- Develop a Culture Camp and quarter-acre regenerative farm where youth can learn hands-on about cultural revitalization, restoration, and sustainable, climate-smart agriculture

This project will bring our community together to heal the land and nurture the next generation of caretakers.

Big News for Humboldt and Sorrel Leaf Healing Center! We’re beyond grateful to Senator Mike McGuire for championing youth mental health in our region as last Monday, he announced over $6 million in new state funding for Humboldt County, including $750,000 directed to Humboldt’s DHHS for Sorrel Leaf Healing Center!

This vital support will help us complete our Arts and Administration Building, giving us an art studio and administrative space so that our main building stays fully focused on youth care.

When Sorrel Leaf opens in Fall 2026, we will be the region's first 12-bed Children’s Crisis Residential Program, a healing campus on 13 acres where youth ages 7–17 can access whole-person care close to home through psychotherapy, art, music, movement, and nature.

For too long, families in Humboldt and nearby counties have had to travel hours away when a child is in crisis. Together, we’re building a future where healing happens here, in community, with connection and compassion.

1 year ago, after a LONG time planning, we began construction on our new Crisis Residential Facility. We appreciate everyone who has been with us from the start back when we thought we’d be open by 2023, oh the amount of red tape we underestimated! But it is with extreme confidence that we can now announce we will be finished with construction of the main facility in early 2926 and having youth in the building by spring 2026! Thanks for all your support over the years. We are still fundraising for other aspects of the campus. Check out our website for the ways you can contribute.

Last Friday, our Executive Director, Shireen, was honored to welcome Senator McGuire to the site of Sorrel Leaf's construction here in Humboldt County. He toured the grounds and showed his support for the critical work being done in his district to address the urgent shortage of youth mental health crisis services in Northern California.

Our Children's Crisis Residential Program represents hope and healing for young people facing a mental health crisis in Humboldt County and beyond, and we are deeply grateful to Senator McGuire for taking the time to see firsthand our construction progress.

We are excited to announce we are now hiring for our next leadership position, the Cultural Coordinator. This position is critical to SLHC's values and beliefs as they will be the primary person to create a network of peer partners who will help support youth from a cultural perspective while at the facility. Additionally, this role will assume coordination of our Cultural Council, an amazing group of folks who have been meeting for almost 2 years providing us with much needed advice and wisdom.
