It’s not the beginning of the year, but any time of year is a good time to shed unhelpful beliefs that are impacting our lives. Change the story you tell yourself to something you would rather believe about yourself even if some changes are required to make it feel true.

As we head into a new year, what thoughts are you shedding?

It’s important to be aware of this issue and for us to develop better ways to support those that have experienced traumas, especially those that may be very difficult to talk about.

January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month, dedicated to educating the public about human trafficking and listening to survivors to understand how to support them. We’ve learned that survivors of human trafficking are not thriving. The systems that were supposed to protect them before, during, and after their human trafficking situations have failed and failed miserably. And few survivors have access to the services they need to heal and thrive. We must listen to survivors and change how and what services are delivered. It’s time to empower survivors to become thrivers.

This is a great reminder not to over simplify the needs of kids. I always try to remember the trigger may look different such as someone touching their toy, but the feelings and needs are quite similar to adult experiences. Perhaps ask yourself how you would feel if someone took your phone?

Sometimes it's harder to remember this wisdom under pressure or under certain people's gazes... here it is to have it fresh in our minds this season!

This video explains some of the reasons why I love doing EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) Therapy with clients! We often can’t think our way out of it or make sense of trauma due to some of our survival mechanisms that often shut down thinking in a crisis, but processing emotions and body sensations that are stuck can help and EMDR helps us do that.
