Rick Davis

Rick Davis of Neal, retired Boeing/Spirit Manufacturing Engineer fell asleep in Christ on Sunday, February 15, 2026, at Ascension Saint Francis Hospital, in Wichita, at the age of 68.

He was born on March 21, 1957 to Frank and Vera (Dawson) Davis in Wichita, Kansas. He attended High School at Bishop Carroll where he played football and sang in the choir. He loved music and took up playing the bass guitar at the age of 14. He played in many rock bands and country bands around the Wichita area. On July 14, 1974, he married his true love, Jill Fitch. They were blessed with one daughter, Angie. After living in Wichita, they moved to Cheney in 1988, then finally to their peaceful country home in Neal in 1997.

Rick enjoyed selling real estate and cars for Gorges Volvo early in his working career before he found his true calling as a Manufacturing Engineer for Boeing/Spirit where he retired after 37 years. Rick was very well respected and admired by his co-workers. In retirement, he enjoyed taking care of the land but his happiest moments were sitting on the porch with Jill drinking coffee and watching the sunrise.

Rick had an intense passion for his Heavenly Father and his Lord Jesus Christ. He would spend hours reading God’s word, researching nutrition and sharing all he could to help others he cared about. He loved his family deeply, always trying to protect and guide them. He gave hugs and told them how much he loved them every time he saw them. He had a kind, generous heart and loved his country profoundly. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, devotion, and a life well-lived.

Rick is survived by his wife of 51 years, Jill of the home; daughter, Angie and son-in-law, Ramon Miller of Wichita; grandchildren Zachary, Logan, and Bailey Miller; and one brother, Steve Davis of Towanda. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Maria Davis.

Richard A Pearse

Richard Algin Pearse, a lifelong resident and familiar face of Eureka, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 13, 2026, at Greenwood County Hospital at the age of 78.

Born in Eureka on January 11, 1948, Richard was the son of Homer Algin and Dorothy Bernice (Lewis) Pearse. He grew up with the values of the community he loved, attending local schools before entering the workforce with a tireless work ethic. After gaining experience with Beard, English and Martin and IPS/Caldwell, Richard found his professional home at Boeing. There, he served as a dedicated maintenance supervisor, a role he held with pride until his well-earned retirement.

On November 3, 1967, Richard was united in marriage to the love of his life, Joyce Ann Thornton. Together, they built a life and a home in Eureka, raising four children in the community they cherished. Joyce preceded him in death on January 1, 2007, and he carried her memory with him every day since.

In his retirement, Richard was rarely still. He could often be found with grease on his hands working on his beloved classic cars, casting a line while fishing, or enjoying the power and excitement of a local truck pull. Yet, for all his interests, family remained his true North. He was the steady heart of his family, and nothing brought a brighter smile to his face than the time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Richard is survived by his four children: Tracy (Russell) McCoy of Neal; Rick (Stacie) Pearse of Eureka; Marcia Pearse of Eureka; and Michelle Watts of Eureka. His legacy lives on through his nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He is further survived by his sister, Beverley Swaim of Little Rock, Arkansas. John Mock

John Henry Mock, 100, of Eureka, Kansas, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of February 6, 2026, at the Veterans Home in Winfield, Kansas. He lived an extraordinary life marked by courage, adventure, and service.

John was born September 18, 1925, in Hamilton, Kansas, to William Edward Mock and Clara Leota (Jacobs) Mock. The eldest of four children, he grew up on the family farm in Greenwood County alongside his siblings David, Maedellee, and Wilma, learning the value of hard work and family from an early age.

When his country called, John answered. Drafted into the United States Army, he served as a rifleman during World War II and was deployed to Germany, where he fought with remarkable bravery and reached the rank of Corporal. He was taken as a prisoner of war, an experience that tested his courage and resilience. He was held prisoner for 99 days before being liberated from his captors. During this harrowing time in battle and captivity, he sustained injuries that he carried with him for the rest of his life. John loved to share his story and pride in service with others. For his valor and service, John was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantry Badge, the European Theater of Operations Medal with three battle stars, the American Defense Service Ribbon, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1945.

After the war, John's adventurous spirit took him around the world. He worked as a mechanic for oil companies on offshore, land, and helicopter drilling rigs, traveling to places most people only dream of visiting. The stories he told of his travels seemed impossible, but were absolutely true, and when he shared them, you couldn't miss the knowing sparkle in his eyes. Among his many adventures, John even raced in NASCAR.

On April 3, 1993, John married Mary Ellen (Brown) Sissman, a fellow World War II veteran. Together they shared a passion for military history and service, and devoted themselves to veterans organizations in Eureka. John also enjoyed show cars and volunteering throughout his community.

A quiet and proud man, John loved his family deeply. His gentle smile was easily seen in his wise eyes, and those who knew him will remember his sweet tooth—especially his love for chocolate. He was a man of few words, but when he spoke, people listened to the wisdom born of a century of living.

He is survived by his sister, Maedellee Scott of Turon; nieces, Susie and husband James Humphrey of Hutchinson, Terri Eskew of Kingman, and Linda Thompson of Wichita; nephews, Gary and wife Debbie Scott of Lyons, and Don Mock of Emporia; and several grand and great-grand nieces and nephews: Jennifer Bain, Rob Eskew, Tracey Weaver, Shawna Scott, Shannon Harrison, Jessica Richardson, Kieryn Bain, Allie Eskew, Carter Eskew, Les Weaver, and Dustin Dubberstein; as well as many extended family members and friends. John was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary Ellen; and siblings, David Mock and Wilma (Mock) Giese.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Monday, February 16, 2026, at Greenwood Cemetery, Eureka, with Pastor Kevin Lawrence of the Climax United Methodist Church officiating. Cremation has been effected per his wishes. Military honors will be rendered by VFW Post 2712.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to VFW Post 2712, for which he himself gave so much time and effort. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home, PO Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045, which is overseeing arrangements. Condolences may be left for the family online at koupfunerals.com.

Bill Schouten

William Dean “Bill” Schouten of Spring, Texas, passed away on Monday, December 29, 2025, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas, at the age of 86.

Bill was born on September 28, 1939, in Piedmont, Kansas, the son of Alfred Ernest and Lena Mae (Newport) Schouten. He was raised in Piedmont and graduated from Piedmont High School. Following graduation, he joined the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Washington State.

It was in Washington that he met the love of his life, Roberta Lee Thoren. They were united in marriage on October 24, 1964. The couple lived in Piedmont for a short time, where Bill ran Charlie's Cafe and Truck Stop, at 400 and P Rd., at night while Roberta worked at the café. Together, they eventually moved to the Houston area to raise their two sons.

After his military discharge, Bill served with the Kansas Highway Patrol. He later began a career with Harris County, where he served in various capacities over a 35-year tenure. He retired in 2002 as the Chief Deputy County Clerk—the highest unelected position in the office.

Bill’s retirement was a true season of rest. While he didn't pursue many formal hobbies, he took great interest in current events and, as with many men of his generation, he would occasionally have his complaints about the state of the world. He enjoyed woodworking and traveling with Roberta; the two shared a special fondness for trips to Alaska, Montana, and Wyoming. Bill and Roberta also shared an overwhelming love for animals in need and held a particular appreciation for moose.

Above all, he cherished time spent with his grandchildren. He will be remembered as a steady, fatherly figure to many—a man of few words but great weight, whose respect was earned through consistency and whose love was felt through his presence.

He is survived by his sons, Brent Schouten and wife, Patty of Conroe, Texas, and Bryan Schouten and wife, Sara of Spring, Texas; six grandchildren: Kylee, Aislynn, Rheanna, Brad, Megan, and Jessica; and eleven great-grandchildren: Madison, Brooklyn, Emma, Sawyer, Braxton, Jaxon, Ally, Taylen, William, Lylah, and Harper. He is also survived by his brother, Lee Schouten of Piedmont, and his sister-in-law, JoAnn Bell of Pearland, Texas. Bill was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Roberta, on November 18, 2022. He was also preceded in death by his parents and three sisters: Pauline Ferry, Louise Lassley, and Barbara Dean.

Earl Urton

Edward “Earl” Urton, a man defined by his tireless work ethic and a lifetime spent building and maintaining the world around him, passed away on Thursday, December 25, 2025, at Fountainview Nursing and Rehab Center in Rose Hill. He was 91 years old.

Earl was born on February 14, 1934, at the family farm in Quincy, the son of John Lyle and Hazel Alice (Louk) Urton. He was raised in the heart of Quincy, attending local schools. He would later attend night classes in Eureka to earn his GED. Earl entered the workforce with the railroad, beginning a seven-decade long journey of dedicated labor.

On January 17, 1956, Earl was united in marriage to Sharron Ilene Soule in Yates Center. Together, they made their home in Eureka and built a life rooted in family and community. To this union, two children were born.

Earl was a man who was never afraid of hard work, often taking on roles that required both physical strength and technical precision. Whether he was handling explosives as a dynamiter for the Greenwood County Quarry or mastering the precision required during his time at Cessna, Earl approached every job with a steady hand. It was during this chapter of his life that he found his true calling behind the controls of heavy equipment. For years, he was a fixture in regional construction, moving the earth and building infrastructure for Maloney Construction, Russell and Sons, Ziegler Corp, and Hogoboom Trucking.

Even after his formal retirement in the early 2000s, Earl’s hands were rarely still. He continued to serve by maintaining the roads for Chelsea Township in Butler County. His creativity was etched in stone—literally—as he spent his later years crafting beautiful, chiseled stone park benches and pursuing intricate carpentry projects. When he wasn't working, he and Sharron shared a passion for the open road, taking many memorable trips together. Sharron preceded him in death on January 16, 2022.

Earl is survived by his children: Bill Urton, and wife, Micki of Rose Hill, Kansas; Teresa and husband, Russ DeCoursey of Charlotte, Tennessee; five grandchildren: Melissa and husband, David Scribner; Renee and husband, Nathan Powers; Bridgette and husband, Jason Cauthen; Brian Urton and wife, Mary; and Aaron Hynick and wife, Becca; and thirteen great-grandchildren who brought him great joy in his later years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two grandchildren, Megan Lee DeCoursey and Bryce Michael Urton; and his three siblings, Howard Eugene “Buster” Urton, Charles A. Urton, and Virgil Lyle Urton.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Friday, January 2, 2026, at Koup Family Funeral Home, Eureka, with Mr. David Scribner officiating. Cremation has taken place. A private family scattering will take place at a later date.

Allen D. Hall

Allen Dale Hall laid down his tools and passed away peacefully at Eureka Nursing Center, Monday, December 22, 2025, at the age of 84. A man who spent his life building a legacy with his own two hands, he entered his final rest surrounded by the memory of a job well done.

He was raised in the Tonovay community and attended local schools where he was active in 4-H, and graduated with the Tonovay High School Class of 1959. Upon graduation, Allen did what he loved most—he went to work. He worked in the oil fields, farmed, and learned carpentry from John Allan during this time. Whether he was on a job site or tinkering at the farm, he was never one to sit still. More than the structures he built, he was the strong foundation of his family, and he was happiest when they were all gathered under one roof.

He was a devoted member of the Christ Lutheran Church of Eureka, Fidelity Lodge 106, Midian Shrine, and various other Masonic affiliations, where he was known for his steady hand and willingness to help with any project. Allen’s commitment to his community was most evident through his 25 years of service as a volunteer firefighter for the city of Eureka. During his five-year tenure as fire chief, he led with the same reliability he brought to his job sites, ensuring the safety of his neighbors and mentoring a new generation of first responders.

Allen is survived by his wife, Sheri, of the home; nine children: Kathryn Johnson and husband, Doug, of Wichita, KS; Jodie Strickland of Valrico, FL; Melisa Burke and husband, Michael, of Wichita, KS; Allison Harris and husband, William, of Groton, CT; Brandon Hall and wife, Calisa, of Eureka, KS; Chris Inmann and wife, Kelly, of Highlands Ranch, CO; Darrell Denton and fianceé, Amy, of Virginia Beach, VA; Elizabeth Hall and partner, Payton, of Lees Summit, MO; and RoseMarie Hall of Eureka; 21 grandchildren: Jeremy, Ashly, Sarah, Hannah, Abigail, Rachel, Joel, Krista, Breeanna, Cheyanna, Adrianna, Caleb, Dreyanna, Celona, Bronwyn, Tobin, Carter, Lila, Garrett, Rowan, and Ainsley; 13 great-grandchildren.
