Last night, I had the opportunity to speak to a wonderful group of practitioners from the American Academy of Physiological Medicine and Dentistry (AAPMD) about my journey to being an IBCLC, family nurse practitioner, advocate for families dealing with feeding difficulties related to tongue/lip tie, and the chairperson of the International Affiliation of Tongue Tie Professionals (IATP). It was so wonderful, and I have made some new friends. I look forward to learning more about their work and how we can collaborate in the future!

Tomorrow - Friday, August 27!

I have three openings for lactation consults/breastfeeding classes available tomorrow at my office in Peoria Dental Care.

I will be accepting DONATIONS ONLY for these three visits to be given to the Black Breastfeeding Week celebration in Peoria on Saturday. I will also have a female physician resident there that will be shadowing me and learning all about supporting breastfeeding families! Go to my website at www.totallactationcare.com and click on the “schedule an appointment” tab. From there, click on any of the visit options and sign up (they will list a cost, but that is waived for tomorrow’s visits).

If you do not need a visit/class, but would like to donate money to the Black Breastfeeding Week celebration, let me know! I would be happy to send you information on how to do that! This is a wonderful way to pay it forward for the help that you have received from lactation supporters in this area. Thank you!

I am so lucky to have been able to observe my friend, Dr. Bobby Ghaheri MD for a morning during the time he was collecting data for this study. This is so, so important to our work. And to have this particular journal publishing the study is an incredible accomplishment.

Great news

Well, it took about 2 years to accomplish it, but I'm happy to announce that our paper entitled: "Objective improvement after frenotomy for posterior tongue-tie: a prospective randomized trial" was accepted in the biggest ENT journal - Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery. With this paper, we were able to demonstrate in a randomized, controlled fashion that:

1) Frenotomy for posterior tongue tie results in objective changes in tongue metrics as measured by a Bluetooth-enabled bottle feeding system

2) The procedure results in improvements in infant reflux, maternal breastfeeding self-confidence and maternal ni**le pain using validated questionnaires

This paper would not have been possible without the financial contributions of those who supported the project initially. I sincerely thank those of you for contributing - this paper will have wide implications. It's the first paper to show that posterior tongue tie affects bottle feeding AND that it affects breastfeeding quality. The paper is strong in that it combines objective measures, validated subjective methods and does so in a randomized, controlled fashion. Once I can share the abstract, I'll post that here.

Proud to be part of the Central Illinois Breastfeeding Task Force!

Through Sunday at midnight, billboards in Peoria and Bloomington show our support of all parents and family structures in honor of Parent's Day 2021 (July 25).

Take a drive and see them! They are located on Pioneer Parkway and I-74/Camp Street in Peoria and the intersection of Veteran's Parkway and Ft. Jesse Road in Bloomington.

What does an IBCLC do with a new litter of puppies and a scale that is accurate to 2 grams?

Weigh them and see how nursing is going, of course!

*** that is a weight on one pup with 4 days difference. FYI… that is a 2 oz per day gain. 😂
