Is it too late to say Happy New Year! Happy New Year Friends! This year, right out of the gate has been a doozy, and it was the first year that I noticed my own apprehension in wishing people a Happy New year. It felt like the word happy was too much to ask for considering the state of the world, politics etc. Perhaps this was a sign that something needed to be acknowledged; People are overwhelmed, shocked, bewildered and at a real level afraid- which is a rational emotion considering the circumstance. Perhaps wishing folks connection, meaning, sanctuary, quality time with friends and loved ones would be more appropriate.

I have just completed an Integrative Somatic Trauma Therapy training and one thing that stands out is that trauma is not always something that happens to us- like a singular event in our past- but can be caused by repeated exposure to ongoing conditions that are outside our windows of tolerance. For many, this is par for the course. Trauma is always something that happens inside us-to our nervous systems- and if it doesn't get addressed, it can lead to toxic stress and PTSD-like symptoms.

Through massage, I am not only offering wonderful and relaxing sessions, but real tools and somatic strategies that are easy to employ. These embodying practices such as deliberately, gently and attentively working with the breath, nervous system awareness and mindfulness, visualization and allowing one's self to exist in a relaxed and parasympathetic state are healing! My goal is to offer these techniques spontaneously and appropriately during most sessions. They are soft and gentle, but directly touch some of the deeper parts of our being and help us break out of the cycle of being locked in a stressful state. This is deeply and directly therapeutic.

It Is my sincere wish that all beings find wellness, and take the allotted time to care for themselves and their nervous systems. Your well-being matters, and especially in times of greater stress.

I can help. If you'd like to book a session you can call or text me;

Hello friends, as of December of last year I have been in practice for just over a decade. My purpose in writing this post is to honor the many clients whom have embarked on this journey of massage Therapy with me, and whom have bravely opened to the somatic process of considering themselves and their greater wellbeing. Also, to speak of the multifaceted disciplines, personal interests and people who have contributed to my ongoing interest and inspiration in the depth of this work; which and whom have strengthened my ability to be present, listen deeply and take real joy in the process of offering you loving support as we all continue in this ineffable, painful and beautiful thing call life.

I would like to acknowledge that which brings people to realize the benefit, if not need of many healing modalities, including Massage. The obvious include injury and the desire to restore functionality, nagging muscular tension, headaches, irritability, anxiety and depression or existential angst to name just a few. To broaden this category, I might include the desire for connection, and to be cared for and touched in a safe non-sexual way. We have all heard of how babies who are separated from their mothers or who are not touched suffer greatly and often die, but it may be that we think adults are exempt from these same basic needs. Also, including the need to slow down, rest and relax from the intensities and demands of life. I will note that the desire to be pampered, tended to or cared for extends to other offerings such as hairdresser, esthetician, you name it. The unique nature of Massage offers a real opportunity to work on many of these levels simultaneously. Due to its holistic approach to somatic principals we are dealing here with deep layers of the body and mind or Bodymind. To differentiate massage from other of these modalities I would like to emphasize its unique nature in providing real and direct Therapy. The terms Massage or bodywork, often sound just like that; something that you receive or happens to you-like passively getting worked on. Although there is absolutely nothing wrong with this as it is often what someone needs, I would like to offer that massage IS Therapy- hence massage (therapist), and also say that there is no one way or reason that someone has to come to Massage.
A crude statistic that I came across recently, was that on a whole, people often take better care of their pets than they do themselves. I can see how the desire to be effective in life, at work, to be good friends, to show up for our imagined expected roles in society puts enormous pressure on ourselves to perform adequately and admirably. It would appear that many of us often neglect some of our basic needs, imagining them to be indulgent, selfish or luxurious, and instead sacrifice our very spiritual and emotional wellbeing on the alters of expedience, utilitarianism, pragmatism, efficiency or any number of imagined "responsibilities". A breaking point or point of crisis is often reached before the real need dawns on us, and for the fortunate few who have insight into those needs and elevate them to the status of necessity- we might all look to them for inspiration and to help teach us positive self regard, compassion and love. The humility and vulnerability which is requisite upon starting such work is a true gift. Thank you!

Lastly, I would like to list those things that I feel qualify me greatly to be in your service. Not to woo you with technical jargon so you trust me based on qualifications alone, but to indicate the many organic disciplines and fortunate encounters which have furthered my education and practices, and which have lead to the deepening of the one true gold standard of it all-Presence. -Among which are my deep connection to nature, my sensitivity of perception, and innate generosity, love, and compassion for life. Nearly two decades of Yoga practice(asana), an interest in the eastern wisdom practices, Pranayama(breath work), Dhyana(meditation) etc.
Also, Vipassana meditation(10 day retreat) and consistent daily meditation for over 2 years, which I've found to be invaluable. Various workshops and intensives: Thai Yoga massage, The Soft Underbelly- a Craniosacral inspired deep dive into Psoas, diaphragm, and the anterior neck with Regina Callahan, Cupping, Alexander technique at Del Arte, Holotropic Breathwork exploration. Familiar with Structural Integration, yoga anatomy. Rosen Method. Several years of weekly classical Reichian therapy, uncomfortable but also invaluable. As well as previous years of therapy.

It would be right to mention those deep wounds of the heart, which I often contributed to bringing about, and which were the hardest to recover from, but have been the greatest teachers and have furthered and fueled my need to look deeper and more honestly as I continue to mend more completely. In the spirit of the wounded healer, those things when transmuted have given me the greatest honesty, humility and compassion for the human condition.

This all has lead me to the wonderful practice of massage, and if you think I could help you feel free - contact me by phone or text.

I do not interact often with Facebook so if you would like to schedule sessions please call or text me : (707) 502-8328

Hello friends, 2023 is off to a good start. The challenges in life never cease and what we're trying to avoid here is excessive anxiety and panic- those irrational functions of the stress response which when let run wild, are generally more disabling than useful. Challenges are not things we can or should always turn away from, as they are opportunities to tolerate and embrace more of life, as well as powerful opportunities to catalyze/alchemize said pain or dis-ease into very powerful things like humility and compassion. Sometimes I feel that the pace of life is crazy fast and we're already 1/6th of the way through 2023. I can have a moment of panic when I get the total at the grocery check-out stand. Wait, how much does food cost now? Coming out of the pandemic, when many of us were just in survival mode, doing the things we needed to get by, there is now perhaps greater opportunity to consider nourishing ourselves, and healing from some of that trauma. Whether that is getting back to the gym, seeing more friends than usual, catching some live music, yoga, walks on the beach, therapy or meditation we all need it. I am strongly biased toward massage, which I offer as a practice to do just that; breathe and relax and really let your nervous systems recover from it all so you can walk through life with a little more calm, courage and awareness. Currently, I have massage openings Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Fridays as well as Sundays. I offer some evening sessions at 5:30, or 6:30 Monday and Tuesday for those who work M-F 9:00-5:00, as well as Sundays into Sunday evening. I will be setting up online booking soon, but until then Call or text me at (707) 502-8328 to book a session. To Health! - Joaquin Dominick, CMT

Hello everyone! I am all set back up in my new office and available for massage. After receiving county approval and with a few new conditions I am seeing a limited number of clients. 2020 has been a rough one and we are all in need of increased self care given all the many angles of stress in our lives. Now that things appear to be returning to some semblance of "normal", its important to acknowledge just how much fear and isolation have impacted our lives. I look forward to connecting with you and assisting you in the therapeutic process of relaxation. Most weeks, with some flexibility, my available hours are Sunday; 12:30, 3:00, or 4:30, Mondays 10:00, 1:00, 3:00 or 6:30, Wednesday 10:00, 1:00, 3:00 or 6:30, and Friday at 4:00. I was asked to do massage for the Redwood Caregiver Resource Center's retreat at the Fieldbrook winery this last Friday. Local caregivers were able to do Tai Chi classes, Qi Gong, painting, meditation and 25 minute massage sessions. The event was catered and in a very beautiful relaxing setting. I really enjoy working with people who care for others because they are often very much in need of being cared for themselves, and put an enormous effort into the work they do. This would include Hospice, CASA, nurses, social workers, psychotherapists etc- everyone really. We all need to be cared for and supported and have time for self care. This is Not selfish, and allows us to be recharged so that we can have the energy, and presence to be with the challenges of life as they come. Wishing you all health and happiness! - Joaquin Dominick, CMT

I just read a really interesting article on somatic experiencing. The term was coined by Peter Levine, PhD. It is a therapeutic technique that is traditionally used to treat PTSD(post traumatic stress "disorder"). In these extreme cases of trauma, the body/mind registers stress, but if a natural release is not found the holding becomes ingrained in the body/mind. It was noted that animals will naturally tremble after being threatened or after exerting energy in life or death situations. According to the article, most animals fare much better than humans do in their recovery from these incidents because of a natural ability to access these somatic release mechanisms. We might experience shock, but if we do not experience a full and healthy release of these energies, they become holding patterns or energetic blockages in the body. These patterns of unreleased trauma have the effect of tightening our musculature(diaphragm, shoulders, abdominals etc etc) and this in turn has the effect of tipping our nervous system to a more sympathetic(fight or flight, uptight) dominance-tightening our attitudes toward life. I will add that there are degrees of trauma from very slight, all the way to severe(which satisfies the specific and rather narrow criteria for PTSD). I think there is an entire spectrum of trauma from micro-traumas(things we just brush off like being startled, or stressed at work) to more severe, but not resulting in the traditional symptoms of PTSD. All of these can be worked through by similar means to those of Somatic Experiencing. In traditional Somatic Experiencing sessions, a client is asked to remember a trauma but then is asked to redirect their attention to the sensations in their bodies before the memories unleash a cascade of difficult emotions, panic or anxiety etc. The Idea, is that as a person allows the initial traumatic event to be "experienced", and redirects attention back to the relative safety of just experiencing sensations in their body, they are able to rewrite, or write over the magnified trauma by soothing the nervous system somatically. A simple non-psychotherapeutic version of this is taking respite from our often sympathetic-dominant world, and allowing our nervous systems to enter a more soothing, restorative, and corrective parasympathetic state. Walks in the forest away from the fray, mediation, yin yoga, Tai chi, Qigong and breathing are good examples of ways to effectively enter that state. Massage is one of the more potent ways of entering the parasympathetic state, because of its ability to help people so readily 'be in their bodies' to experience relaxing sensations and the manual releasing of tensions. Breath will usually open up spontaneously when this happens. Breath is a unique component of the work and bears mentioning because its therapeutic effect is so readily accessible to us if we consciously breathe, and direct it to those ends. Slow Deep breathing sends messages to the brain and Endocrine system to pull us out of sympathetic nervous system dominance. I often joke that there is a social fopaux around deep breathing or sighing- as if someone will ask us if we are "ok?", or ask "what's wrong?" if we sigh. I think people should breath and sigh more often- unapologetically. The breath has an uncanny ability to restore health and relieve tension. That's why it is called the "breath of life". I have really been enjoying working with clients to resolve common tension issues, and have been focusing on how the breath can greatly assist not only the letting go of tensions, but the healing of many sorts of trauma and holding in the body. The breath is always there for us. To Health!
