Today is World Autism Awareness Day, and it also invites a deeper reflection on what real inclusion requires. As Autism Acceptance Month begins, ITA is taking time to reflect on the importance of language, advocacy, and ensuring autistic voices remain central. We all have a role to play in helping create communities rooted in dignity, support, and belonging.

Last week, we honored Marilyn “Toddy” Richman, founder of Institute for Therapy through the Arts (ITA), in celebration of her birthday.

Each year, our staff wears purple — Toddy’s favorite color — to honor her life, her vision, and the legacy she left behind. This tradition is one small way we remember the incredible foundation she built and the lasting impact of her work.

Toddy’s spirit continues to live on in the work we do each day and in the lives touched through creative arts therapy.

We remember her with deep gratitude. Happy Birthday Toddy! 💜

Programs like Ohio University’s music therapy program do more than educate students — they help shape the future of care.

At ITA, we have seen that impact firsthand through OU alumni whose work has helped strengthen services and support thousands of individuals and families. We are grateful for this program’s legacy and proud to stand alongside Ohio University Music Therapy and all those advocating for its future.

As we continue celebrating Creative Arts Therapies Week, we’re highlighting the four modalities that help shape the work of ITA: art therapy, dance/movement therapy, drama therapy, and music therapy.

While each modality offers a distinct approach, together they reflect something central to ITA’s work — creating meaningful opportunities for individuals, families, and communities to express themselves, build connection, process experiences, and grow through Creative Arts Therapy.

This work is creative, relational, and rooted in meeting people where they are. That is why these four modalities are such an important part of how ITA serves our community.

If you’d like to continue learning with us, join us for ITA’s 10th Annual Integrated Creative Arts Therapy Conference, taking place June 5 – 7, 2026, in person in Evanston or virtually. Register by March 21 and receive 25% off with code CATWEEK26.

ITA was proud to be represented at the 2026 Great Lakes Region Conference of the American Music Therapy Association. From meaningful conversations and renewed connections to fresh ideas and continued learning, it was a valuable time of reflection, growth, and inspiration for our music therapists, music therapy interns, and leadership. Opportunities like this strengthen our commitment to high-quality care and to the future of music therapy.

On February 25, Institute for Therapy through the Arts (ITA) was honored to support Strings of Life, a powerful world-premiere performance centered on su***de prevention, human connection, and hope.

Created by our dear friend Paul Hamilton, the evening featured moving performances by Paul, Jinty McTavish, Timothy Archbold, and Andrew Vogt. Paul, Jinty, and Tim have also been part of ITA’s Musical Bridges to Memory program, sharing the power of music with individuals living with dementia and their care partners for years.

Alongside our partners at AFSP Illinois Chapter, ITA was proud to help create a safe and supportive space for reflection, advocacy, and connection. It was a meaningful reminder that even in life’s heaviest moments, no one is meant to carry them alone.

We are grateful to have been part of an evening that used music to shine a light on mental health, su***de prevention, and the healing power of community.
