Parent and caregiver involvement plays an important role in communication progress. When families understand the goals of therapy and use simple strategies at home, children build skills more quickly and more confidently.

Caregiver participation helps with:
• Reinforcing new skills throughout the day
• Improving carryover from session to home
• Building consistent routines for practice
• Reducing frustration by giving children clear ways to communicate
• Supporting long-term success

Therapists are always ready to share ideas, answer questions, and provide activities that fit your child’s everyday life. https://nucasll.northwestern.edu/

Play is one of the most powerful tools for supporting communication development. Through activities like pretend play, children practice language, early social interaction, sequencing, and flexible thinking.

Therapists choose materials that match a child’s interests and communication goals so each session feels meaningful and motivating. When learning feels like play, progress comes more naturally.

Parents often ask how to know when a child may benefit from speech therapy. Here are a few helpful signs to watch for:

• A smaller vocabulary than expected for their age
• Difficulty being understood by others
• Challenges following directions
• Frequent frustration when trying to communicate
• Limited use of sounds, gestures, or words

Not every child who shows one of these signs needs therapy, but they are good reasons to check in with a speech-language pathologist. Early guidance can provide clarity and support for families.

An evaluation is the first step in understanding communication needs and creating a clear plan forward. We begin by reviewing medical history, communication concerns, and family goals.

Testing may include speech, language, hearing, cognition, or social communication measures. We also observe real-world communication in play, conversation, reading, and daily routines. A graduate student clinician and a licensed clinician collaborate on every part of the assessment to ensure a complete and accurate picture.

If you have questions about evaluations or want to talk with our team, we are here to help. https://nucasll.northwestern.edu/

This room is where preparation meets creativity. Every bin holds materials that help children practice language, speech sounds, social communication, and early learning skills in ways that feel fun and motivating.

Clinicians and student clinicians use these tools to design sessions that reflect each child’s interests and needs. Purposeful play is one of the most effective ways to support communication growth, and spaces like this help make that possible.

Please join us in welcoming our newest audiology clinical faculty member to NUCASLL, Barbara Rezabek, Au.D., CCC-A!

We are excited to highlight Debbie Lee, who works with school-aged children in the areas of language and literacy.

Debbie started her career in learning disabilities and spent time as a resource room teacher. During that work, she noticed that many of her students were experiencing challenges rooted in language rather than only academics. This insight led her to pursue speech-language pathology so she could better understand and treat the underlying communication needs that affect learning.

Her experience gives her a unique perspective on how language skills support reading, writing, and success in the classroom. Families and students benefit from her dedication and expertise every day.

Play is an important part of how children learn communication skills.

Climbing, jumping, and exploring support speech, language, attention, and social development in meaningful ways.

Our pediatric therapy spaces allow children to move, try new tasks, and build confidence while clinicians and student clinicians guide each step with individualized goals.

Supporting communication and connection during the holidays

The end of the year can be filled with celebration, reflection, and togetherness. It can also bring noise, emotion, and communication challenges for individuals and families navigating hearing loss, speech differences, or language needs.

At the Northwestern University Center for Audiology, Speech, Language, and Learning, our clinicians, faculty, and students work together to provide personalized, evidence-based care across the lifespan. From hearing health education and practical strategies for holiday gatherings to specialized programs like Break the Blocks, our work is rooted in patience, collaboration, and research-informed practice.

This month, we are also highlighting the continued growth of Break the Blocks, including new offerings for adults who stutter, as well as opportunities to participate in communication research that advances care and understanding across our community.
