In honor of World Speech Day, we’re proud to spotlight Catherine Apt, a student clinician in Northwestern’s Speech-Language Pathology program, sharing how SLPs support confident, effective communication across the lifespan.

From strengthening breath control for vocal endurance to refining tone and organizing clear, intentional messages, speech-language pathologists help individuals communicate with confidence in academic, professional, and public settings.

Our student clinicians work alongside expert faculty to provide thoughtful, personalized, research-informed care because communication is a universal human right.

Happy World Speech Day! 💜

We decided to make it audiology.

🎧 Come for the rivalry
🦻 Stay for the hearing science

On International Women’s Day, we recognize the women who lead, teach, research, and deliver care across our center.

From clinical practice to education and research, their leadership strengthens patient care while mentoring future clinicians. This work advances communication health and supports excellence in training and service.

We are proud to highlight the women behind this mission.

Communication takes many forms, and spoken language is only one of them.

Augmentative and alternative communication systems support individuals in expressing preferences, emotions, and needs when speech is limited or unavailable. These tools are selected and implemented thoughtfully to promote independence, participation, and meaningful interaction.

Supporting communication access is an essential part of inclusive, evidence based care. https://nucasll.northwestern.edu/

More than 1.5 billion people worldwide are living with hearing loss, and by 2050, over 700 million people will require treatment.

Hearing loss does not just affect what we hear. It can impact communication, emotional well-being, cognition, and increase the risk of social isolation and depression. Even more concerning, nearly 17% of U.S. teens show signs of noise-induced hearing loss. Just one traumatic sound, like a firework going off too close, can cause permanent damage.

While hearing loss cannot yet be cured, it can be treated and prevented.

✔️ Avoid prolonged exposure to loud environments
✔️ Monitor your volume levels
✔️ Wear hearing protection
✔️ Schedule a hearing evaluation with an audiologist

This , take a moment to protect one of your most vital connections to the world. Your hearing health matters at every age.

Many communication disorders are rare, complex, or often misunderstood.

For individuals with rare conditions, care often requires deeper evaluation, specialized expertise, and time. Research plays a critical role in helping clinicians understand these conditions and adapt approaches as knowledge continues to evolve.

Individualized, research-informed care allows support to reflect each person’s unique experience, even within the same diagnosis.

We recognize the importance of awareness, research, and thoughtful collaboration in communication care. https://nucasll.northwestern.edu/

Today we recognize International Cochlear Implant Day, a time to raise awareness about how cochlear implants can transform access to sound, language, and connection for individuals with significant hearing loss.

At the Northwestern University Center for Audiology, Speech, Language, and Learning, cochlear implant care is grounded in both clinical excellence and research innovation.

Dr. Tracy Winn, Au.D., Associate Clinical Professor, provides diagnostic audiology, hearing technology expertise, and auditory processing evaluation for both pediatric and adult patients. Her clinical leadership helps ensure that individuals being considered for advanced hearing technology receive thorough, personalized, evidence-based care.

Together with faculty expert Dr. Monita Chatterjee, an auditory scientist and professor whose work focuses on how people with cochlear implants perceive sound and speech, our team bridges research and real-world clinical service. With a background in electrical engineering and neuroscience, her research connects technology, hearing, and everyday communication. Her work advances understanding of auditory processing while helping shape more effective clinical care and inclusive research communities.

This collaboration strengthens how we evaluate, program, and support cochlear implant users across the lifespan.

International Cochlear Implant Day is a reminder that hearing care is not one-size-fits-all. It requires thoughtful evaluation, research-informed decision making, and ongoing partnership with patients and families.
