Psychotherapy / talk therapy has its place and certainly helped in multiple ways before I discovered Somatic Experiencing therapy. Sure I still have a couple mental health diagnoses but a majority of my trials were due to childhood trauma and not understanding how to find safety in myself and my environment. I became hypervigilant and living in a constant global high or hyperactive state because that's what I thought people liked about my personality! WHEW!

For a woman that could talk her way out of anything I needed something more embodied, something that forced me to tap into my introception and actually trust what I was sensing over what people were telling me was happening.

It is both frustrating and immensely liberating to be able to identify my management strategies and let them go because they are no longer serving me!!

I'd love to hear your experience with mental health and share what I have discovered is different about somatic work. Drop a line in the comments or DM me if you'd be interested in learning how we could work together!

Day 4 of defining Somatic Experiencing Therapy.

Some take aways as it seems I will never be a concise speaker 😆

Everything you experience is connected // nothing in the body happens in isolation!

What happens to your body also affects your soul. What you spend your time thinking about is witnessed by your physical tissues.
What inspires your soul energizes your mind.

The best part of Somatics is that even a little bit of movement, of creative expression, or allowing for deep rest HAS A POSITIVE EFFECT ON ALL THE SYSTEMS!

Healing a bit of your road rage can turn down the volume on the childhood experiences that shade your true potential.

Your emotional state, your reaction to a trigger ARE NOT your personality. I experienced so much relief in learning that and I would love to share the journey with you!

More space
More time
More curiosity
More connection
all add up to more capacity!

Day 3 of explaining Somatics!

Somatics refers to a category of healing practices that help individuals reconnect with the sensations occurring in their bodies. Across different lineages and methods, somatic work is grounded in the understanding that trauma and overwhelming stress live not only in the mind but also in the body.

When overwhelm occurs, the body often doesn’t get the chance to fully process the energy created to help us move away from perceived danger. Whether that danger shows up as fear, frustration, anger, or sadness, that unprocessed energy can become stuck and manifest as pain, tension, anxiety, or restricted movement.

Somatic experiencing is one approach within this broader field. It helps you tune into deep physical sensations while creating a sense of safety for the body to gradually complete its stress response. The process happens gently and does not require reliving or naming the original event. Instead, your body learns to respond rather than react — allowing for greater regulation and groundedness.

The autonomic nervous system governs our survival responses: fight, flight, freeze, and fawn. These are not necessarily optimal or pleasant, but they keep us alive. Ideally, once the threat has passed, the nervous system returns to regulation. Difficulties arise when that return to balance doesn’t happen — when the system stays stuck in survival mode.

It’s important to remember that an experience doesn’t need to appear “traumatic” to be stored as such in the body. Trauma is less about what happened and more about the body’s response — moments that were too much, too fast, too soon, or too little — without enough support for the individual to process and integrate the experience.

I hope this series has helped bring clarity to Somatics. A few more days and a few more examples coming your way soon!

Hello! I'm Tiffany Hutchens, owner of Move Better Healing Therapies in Evansville, IN.
Check out my office photos and some more details about what I do!

I believe that human beings have infinite capacity to grow and change- my own journey is proof of it. I have learned that you cannot separate your lived- experience from your body, but with compassionate support we can open to the wisdom that it holds for us.
Communing with nature and finding moments to be playful are not only integral to my personal well-being, but are woven into my approach as a practitioner as well. My hope is to be a conduit as you move through your own challenges.

I feel so grateful to combine my 15+ years of Kinesiology and Orthopedic bodywork with extensive study into Somatics-
how we feel our bodies from within. Somatic Experiencing provides a compassionate and confidential container for exploring what makes us feel stressed, sick, and stuck. You will learn about your Autonomic (automatic) nervous system and why it's primary job is to keep you alive, not happy. With guidance you will come to understand your physiological needs more clearly and experience a gentle way to alleviate stress and trauma.

Somatic Experiencing Therapy is helpful for those who have experienced:
Auto accidents
Head impacts/concussion
Chronic pain
Addiction
Surgery/Anesthesia
C-PTSD
Environmental sensitivities
Grief, Shame, or Fear
Physical or Sexual Assault
Depression/Anxiety
Perfectionism/obsessive habits

I'd love to tell you more! check out movebetterhealing.com or drop me a DM.

Our Story

Orthopedic Massage uses therapeutic techniques to alleviate muscle pain and movement restrictions. We primarily treat athletes and individuals who wish to stay active through all of life’s stages. The following is an outline of our treatment plan.

We hope this helps you see our approach to massage therapy. We have studied far outside the lines of bodywork to understand what truly builds a resilient body. There are plenty of places to get a full body massage that will help you feel better. But we want to help you move better, know better, live better, and feel better!

  • 1.Client’s experience of pain, therapist-observed movement dysfunctions, focus is on relieving immediate pain, but also prioritizing subsequent concerns. Encompasses information provided in intake form through the 2nd or 3rd appointment.

  • 2.Whole- health examination to identify contributing habits: ergonomics, bio-mechanics/ joint range of motion, functional strength for longevity, hydration, nutrition, and stress management. Discussed over 2nd -4th appointments with daily adjustments a must for success.
