Recruitment, philanthropy, alumni engagement, community connection — it will all happen at the future Tedrick Welcome Center, a new "front door" for Southern Illinois University Carbondale and a symbol of Saluki pride.

Southern Illinois University is preparing to open a new front door to campus life with the Tedrick Welcome Center, now under construction at the university’s main entrance off U.S. Highway 51.

Scheduled for completion in May 2026, the 44,000-square-foot facility will serve as the home of the SIU Foundation and include a 14,000-square-foot welcome center designed to support campus visits, alumni and donor engagement, and community events. The project marks SIU’s first major on-campus construction in more than a decade. It is funded entirely through the SIU Foundation, requiring no taxpayer dollars, tuition revenue, or student fee monies.

At Hafer, we love a good design challenge—especially the ones that force us to get creative.

Recently, our team has had the unique opportunity to give old bank safes new life. Previously in a bank building, a massive safe was completely transformed into a polished conference room for the University of Evansville Emily M. Young Mental Health Clinic. In another previous bank space, we tucked a safe into the back bar of Big Whiskey's American Restaurant and Bar so well that guests would never know it was there.

Our communities rely on local firefighters for all things fire safety—especially as we start turning up the heat when it's cold outside.

Opening this year, the Walter Freeman Training Center gives new and current firefighters a modern place to train, learn, and stay ready. Spanning a full city block, the new center also functions as a firehouse and includes a manufactured training tower that supports on-grade burn training. Drive by on a training day, and you could witness real fires—and real community heroes in action.
