Good afternoon and Happy Saturday.Early this week was the full Moon. It was the Beaver Moon. Why you ask was it the Beaver Moon. It is because this is the time of year that the Beaver seals its lodge marking the end of harvest and the beginning of hibernation
Beaver lodges are constructed by piling sticks, logs, mud, and rocks into a dome shape, which is typically built in ponds or on the banks of rivers. Beavers use their sharp teeth to fell trees and break down materials, then use their paws to pack mud to seal the walls and provide insulation. The finished structure has a living chamber above water and underwater entrances for protection from predators.
Beavers prepare for winter by building and reinforcing their lodges with mud for insulation and creating an underwater food cache of tree branches for sustenance. They do not hibernate but rely on their lodges for warmth and access their food stores by swimming through underwater entrances even when the water is frozen.
So, we should be taking lessons from the Beaver moon and start preparing for winter. Make sure your weather stripping is still in good shape. Do you have storm windows or is there another way to prevent drafts in your house? The news feed on my telephone said that winter is coming early and we should have arctic winds starting as early as November 10. Are your outdoor critters comfortable in cold weather?
So, I will leave you with one truism – an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. It is more comforting to know you are prepared than have to go out for something when the weather is inclement and products might be short on the shelves.
Stay warm, dry and cozy.
