Although I had danced for a good 18 years at Peak Academy in Conifer, Colorado, it wasn't until a sticky day in July, 2015, Boston, Massachusetts that my #GetFitWithLyn journey truly began to take root...
I had noticed my right eye started to feel scratchy. Like an eyelash was stuck under my eyelid; however, I searched my eye and flushed it with entire containers of eye-drops with no avail.. I went to the doctor every two weeks for 3 months where they told me it was a number of things: “an eye cold- here’s some drops for that”... “There’s a scratch in your eye that must be infected -- here’s some drops for that”... “Hmmm, still not better.. probably just a really prominent eye cold - here’s some more drops for that”...
Finally, after the third month, my primary care physician was at a loss. At that point, within a week my vision was now leaving me quite rapidly. It went from 20/20 to 20/40 in 8 days. My PCA finally decided to send me to a specialist. However, when I arrived at the specialist - HE didn't know what was wrong, so he sent me to ANOTHER specialist.. Once I finally landed in Doctor Foster’s, at MERSI, he ran some blood tests and discovered what was going on...
“Scleritis caused by HLA-B27”.. Naturally this didn't make sense to me, so, in layman terms it was explained to me like this: HLA-B27 is a protein that attaches to the white blood cells and as a result it triggers an inflammatory reaction within different areas of the body. In my case, it hit my eyes.
So what did this mean?
Well, at this point I was very sedentary. I was eating 3 sugar cookies smothered in icing to dip in my coffee for breakfast. (As I am acutely aware of now, sugar is an inflammatory promoting food.. so.. oops!). I was also drinking alcohol like a sailor (was married to a Marine at the time, so it wasn't all that taboo of a lifestyle). Overall, I wasn't caring for my body the way I should have been...
My specialist said to me: “You need to start working out and eating well.” I said, “eating well??” He replied with, “Lean meats, fruits, and veggies.”
So I got right on it. In correlation with the chemo treatment of methotrexate that he put me on - I was now more motivated than ever to change my life. I chose to start slow. I would simply show up to the gym and walk for 15 minutes, then go home. For ME this worked as to not discourage myself by over-loading my body with workouts I hadn’t done in a few years. Overwhelming myself just to quit was not my vision...
With this strategy in place, over time, 15 minutes turned to 30, which turned to 60, which turned to 90... Working out was no longer a chore but a way I could care for my body; and, not only my body but I saw an incredible increase in my mental ability to endure and cope and overcome hardship. I was training my body yes, but, I was also training my mind.
Within the first year of my renewed journey towards self-care - it was clear my husband and I were no longer compatible. He didn't want to join me in my pursuit of health, and therefore, left. I took this opportunity to move back to Colorado and plug in to a fantastic gym family: the Colorado Athletic Club in Boulder which opened even more doors of opportunity for me...
2.5 years after my initial diagnosis, I am now in remission and off methotrexate (praise God, and I pray 10 fold blessings on all those who have kept me in their prayers to recovery!)
I am now an accomplished Personal Trainer, Group Fitness Instructor, Life Coach, and Energy Relaxation Specialist -- ready and excited to do the best I can for each person who chooses to invite me as a prominent part of their journey towards holistic health through fitness. I am opening my own studio space the beginning of April where I hope you, my dear friends, family, and readers, will choose to join me in the pursuit of self-care, self-acceptance, and healthy living through fitness.
There’s nothing else I would rather be doing, and I am SO blessed and fortunate to have a Lord who provides for me and loves me; and friends and family who fully support and love me in my fitness career goals and dreams... Its only that I share the blessings I am being given
