Rollo Reese May

Rollo Reese May His 1949 dissertation on anxiety became his third book and attracted wide interest. His book Love and Will became a bestseller in 1969.

Rollo May's life, so rich in its contribution to the field of psychological theory and practice, must be understood within the context of the cultural tradition of his boyhood and early manhood, that of the small town, Protestant Midwest. If Tillich, Adler, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Kierkegaard, and others shaped May's mature intellectual life, it is also true that the basic precepts of his upbringing and his first career choice-that of the ministry with its ethic of helping and healing-determined the way May would apply his later understandings within the sphere of the world. For nearly the next three decades, May was a Manhattan-based psychotherapist, prolific writer, and intermittent academician. May moved to the San Francisco area several years later, where he continued to write, train graduate students as clinicians, and lecture widely. May also still conducted psychotherapy. Among his favorite therapeutic questions was: “What is going on with you now at the deepest level that you can get a hold of?” It’s a key question for all of us--and one sure to catalyze personal growth.

Rollo Reese May, the Father of American Existential Psychology.

“Many people suffer from the fear of finding oneself alone, and so they don't find themselves at all.”

When interpreting a natal chart, the best method is to start gradually from general features to specific ones. Thus, there is usually a plan to be followed, from the overall analysis of the chart and its structure to the description of its different character traits.

The analysis of an astrological portrait consists in understanding four types of elements which interact with one another: ten planets, twelve zodiacal signs, twelve houses, and what are called aspects between planets (the 11 aspects most used are: conjunction, opposition, square, trine, sextile, quincunx, semi-sextile, sesqui-quadrate, quintile, and bi-quintile. The first 5 aspects enumerated are called major aspects).

I was born under the sign of the Rooster, element Earth.

Chinese astrology is brought to us as a legacy of age-old wisdom and invites us to develop an awareness of our inner potential. It is believed that the wise man is not subjected to stellar influences. However, we must gain the lucidity and the distance without which we remain locked up in an implacable destiny.

Who: Rollo May & Viktor Frankl
Where: Mental Facility

Visiting a mental facility, both Frankl and I observe the behavior of the patients. These patients are survivors from a war, acquiring a trauma on what they witnessed during being in a war. Suffering from guilt and loss after what happened, they will start to think and question their meaning in this life. We can help them by letting them undergo therapy and making them think about the lives that they lived. We will make them understand their meaning and purpose in this life and by searching for it they needed to endure the hardships and sufferings. Going on a mental facility with patients who survived in a war is a sentimental part for the both of us, knowing that we can extend our hands to help them find their meaning in life.

Who: Rollo May & Erich Fromm
Where: Hospice

Fromm and I will visit a hospice where people who have cancer and incurable disease resides. We can have a seminar and talk to each patient about life and death, how death is destined upon us humans and we shouldn’t be scared instead use it as a motivation to exercise our freedom. Fulfill our hearts and mind with love and acknowledge our self. As what Fromm said, a road map without a destination is worthless and as what I qoute, a life becomes more vital, more meaningful when we confront the possibility of death. Don’t think about the future, live the moment, and make the most out of it. Connect yourself with your environment, people, and yourself can help with anxiety. Fromm and I will fore sure have lots of fun visiting a hospice because we help people who fear life and death.

We all wonder why we are here at times and what our purpose is, don't we? For youth groups, Existence is associated with growth and change; essence signifies stagnation and finality. For cancer patient support group, people are both subjective and objective and must search for truth by living active and authentic lives. Spiritual groups frequently have fears in their hearts since the world is unpredictable; yet, as I have stated, turn your anxieties into courage and continue forward despite the fear because we are all lucky to have existential freedom.

Gestalt

My concepts are connected to gestalt approach, which is centered on increasing a person's awareness, freedom, and self-direction. I believed that lack of courage to face our destiny, and in the process of fleeing from it, we give up much of our freedom. In contrast to this, healthy people challenge their destiny, cherish their freedom, and live authentically with other people and with themselves. They recognize the inevitability of death and have the courage to live life in the present.

Humanistic

My work stems from humanistic psychology, which focuses on the capacity for growth and achievement in human beings. I took these ideas a step further as I explored the purpose of anxiety in human beings. I also proposed that anxiety emerged because of uncertainty in life and of looming death.
