Is THIS your Thanksgiving to-do list?

1. Brush teeth
2. Put on a cozy sweater
3. Eat breakfast and lunch, but not too much. Think about how full I’ll be later.
4. Watch the parade and some football.
5. Arrive anxious to Thanksgiving dinner.
6. Feel terrible about having eaten said dinner.
7. Eat dessert
8. Feel guilt/shame/uncomfortable fullness/regret about eating dessert.
9. Vow to do better next Thanksgiving, with little conviction.

Proposed ALTERNATE Thanksgiving to-do List:

1. Put on a cozy sweater
2. Do regular things
3. Eat regular foods
4. Arrive happy to Thanksgiving dinner.
5. Choose the foods that look good to you in the moment.
6. Eat them.
7. Be happy you ate them.
8. Savor in the moment of being able to enjoy such delicious cooking and lovely people.

Had a great time answering the gamut of questions with this crew from basics like ➡️“how to handle binge eating with intuitive eating methods” to “what should I do when my family members are commenting on their bodies all the time?” to complex questions like➡️: “how long does it take in ED recovery to start noticing the ED voice?” And “ how can an athlete learn to love their body when their environment tells them they need to be perfect by certain standards?” 💥 This crowd was 🔥. This panel of ladies was amazing to be with. ( 👌🏻) I WISH I could have taken a class like this back when I was in school!
Education and awareness is so important. Being transparent about the harms of diet culture, negative body image and the severity of eating disorders is what the next generation needs. I salute these undergraduate students being so proactive about their future and about the health of the people they will one day serve as professionals in the field.

Feb 25- March 3 is National Eating Disorders Awareness Week.
This years theme, highlights NEDA’s movement towards inclusivity in the greater community and their goal of unifying the field of eating disorder treatment. “Come As You Are” sends a message to all Individuals at all stages of and that their stories are valid.
Whether you are old, young, obese, underweight, male, female, tall, short, in treatment, in recovery, or recovered. Whether you are employed professionally, unemployed and homeless, a parent, a child, a grandparent, a teacher, a life coach, a principal, an athlete, a chef, an exercise instructor. You are worthy of treatment. No matter your age, your gender, or your level of care. You are worthy of getting healthier. You deserve that. Come as you are, not as you think you should be. .

⚠️CRAVINGS. ⚠️They are real. Oooooooooh, are they real. I happen to know this, well, because I happen to be human.
📍FACT: Most people experience a craving for texture, temperature or flavor. This means that a craving will make you want “something sweet” or “something crunchy and salty” or “something cold and icey.” Can you relate?? .
The reputation of cravings is that they are BADDDDD and should be CONTROLLED. Enough of that, guys. This is no way to live.

🧡Craving food is WONDERFUL. It is a sign that you are living, breathing, eating, pleasure-seeking human.

🧡Here’s a CHALLENGE FOR YOU: Allow yourself to listen to your cravings instead of yelling at them and telling them to go away. Some of these cravings might lead you to a bowl of salad. It’s a treat, an opportunity, and an experience to eat enjoyable food. How come we must think salad is meant to be eaten as a diet food? Don’t give salad the power to be an answer to your body-type dreams. It’s literally just a salad, let it be. Once you let yourself WANT everything, and then give yourself what you want, then your body gets behind this and guess what?———✨✨✨your cravings will become aligned with your nutrient needs.✨✨✨

33.3% each. ONE THIRD. Not 80/20/0. Not 50/50/0. Not 60/30/10. All three of these pillars are equally important. (Read that sentence again to solidify it.)

1️⃣A meditative spiritual philosopher who is vegan 🧘‍♂️ , is totally sedentary 6/7 days of the week- is NOT healthy. .
2️⃣A 20 time medal-winning weight lifting champ 🏋️‍♀️, eats powdered and processed food and supplements for energy and has anger management problems, is NOT healthy. .
3️⃣A very fit and exercise focused, smoothie-drinking and vegetable-eating health guru 🥗 who has obsessive body dysmorphia and interrupted sleep habits is NOT healthy .
Now, I am not a therapist and I never will claim to be one. But I am a dietitian who has worked with hundreds of clients and who knows very well that there is no movement towards health if a person cannot manage to motivate or believe in themselves. This block, which I meet with my clients at some point in their journey comes from ignoring the importance of WELLNESS. Defined (to me) as: the ability to stay present, focused, calm, confident, and goal focused without emotional distraction. It’s not my job to help you manage that, but it is my job to point out that you will get nowhere without dealing with it first. Respect that 33.3% of your health. ✊

The media be like “DONT EAT COOKIE DOUGH! EAT COOKIE DOUGH! ITS BAD FOR YOU! ITS GOOD FOR YOU!” 🤷🏼‍♀️ 😐 .

Why is nutrition so confusing?! One day it’s a miracle food and another day it’s definitely going to give you cancer. 🤣🤣Let’s make it simple, shall we? ⏩⏩⏩EAT THIS. All of it. But can you save some for me, puhlease? 🙏🏻

EDIBLE COOKIE DOUGH DIP:
☑️1 1/2 cans garbanzo beans, rinsed well. (Stay with me, people)
☑️1/4 cup almond butter
☑️1/2 cup brown sugar
☑️1/4 tsp salt
☑️1/8 tsp baking soda
☑️2 tsp vanilla
☑️1/8 cup unsweetened almond milk
☑️2 tbsp oats
☑️1/3 cup chocolate chips

Blend all ingredients until smooth in a food processor, mix in chocolate chips, and promptly devour with friends.

🏝 Vacations are like the last supper. The week before New Years. The holidays. Your birthday. If you are a victim to diet culture, they are filled with regrets about food and vows to dust off and detox tomorrow. ❌Nope, this is not how I live. ❌.
Food freedom is being able to eat 1️⃣🍪 on a random Tuesday night because all you want is 1️⃣🍪 on that random Tuesday night. It’s also eating 1️⃣🍪 on vacation because all you want is 1️⃣🍪 on vacation. It’s eating a hearty nutritious salad for lunch because that’s what you want and need, whether you’re on a Caribbean island or sitting in your office cubicle.
The thing about freedom with food is that there are no rules. With full trust in your body, and in yourself, you are truly able to eat when you are hungry and stop when you are full. This takes practice.
————————————————-In life, there are times with celebratory food. Food that comes with social gatherings, joyous occasions, beautifully plated hor dourves. The inclusion of these foods in your diet is always based on what you want at the time. 🏝 On vacation, it’s true that there are many more opportunities that you’ll probably encounter celebratory foods. Regardless, you use the same freedom, the same brain, the same body to make those decisions.
✨There’s no end to this diet. ✨It doesn’t stop or start based on location or if you’re wearing a bathing suit 👙. ✨ It is forever, and it’s sustainable. The only diet you’ll ever need and the only one that will ever work, and this is only because it’s not a diet. It’s a way of life. ✨

Unlike the bad rap dietitians have for “taking away your favorite foods,” the real trick to snacking is to ADD. Your snacks should ideally consist of 2️⃣ components. And if you really want to be a perfectionist- make those components Protein+Fiber. (Like this fiber-y 🌶 with some protein-y Hummus) *️⃣ So you wanna have some pretzels? Great. Make em Whole Grain (Fiber-y) and combine with a string cheese or dried soybeans (protein-y). Want an apple? Have it, enjoy. But ADD almond butter, or a handful of cashews. ———————————————-Follow this rule and you’ll feel satiated immediately from the protein and will be fuller for longer from the fiber. ✨Sometimes rules make decisions easier✨. Now you almost know what to eat. But I still didn’t tell you what flavors, textures or actual foods you will choose. That, my dear insta scroller, is up to you. 🤷🏼‍♀️
