Join us for a once-in-a-lifetime retreat—an extraordinary immersion into the roots of devotion and yoga in North India. 🪷 🌍

Led by Lesley Desaulniers and Seema Johari, this journey will take you through some of India’s most sacred and vibrant places, where tradition, spirituality, and culture come alive.

Our adventure begins in Delhi, where the old and new weave together in a captivating tapestry of history and modernity. After a night in the capital, we take a short flight to Varanasi, one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities. Here, we will stay at a riverside hotel, waking each morning to yoga practice with the sounds of temple bells and devotional chants in the air. Our days will be filled with temple visits, explorations through ancient streets, and quiet moments of reflection, culminating each evening with the sacred Ganga Aarti by the river.

From Varanasi, we travel to Haridwar, where we will stay in the Johari family home. In Haridwar, we will visit renowned temples, craft our own malas at Om Prakash, spend time at the Anandamayi Ma, and nourish ourselves with lovingly prepared, healing meals. A stay at the Johari house is always a heartwarming highlight of these retreats.

Next, we move to Rishikesh, where optional Ayurvedic treatments, sunrise mantra practice on the Ganga, evening Aarti, and vibrant markets await. After a brief return to Haridwar, we set off for our final destination: Jaipur, the Blue City, where we’ll soak in its rich heritage, stunning architecture, and vibrant energy.

Our journey concludes with a celebratory dinner in Delhi before flying home, carrying the essence of this sacred pilgrimage in our hearts.

Please reach out to us if you are interested or have any questions about the trip. 🧘🏼‍♀️

Yogis,

I was twenty years old when I went to India for the first time. The experience changed my life in many powerful and beautiful ways.

It’s an honor and joy to bring students from our Padma community to the sacred land that I love every year.

🎶 Join Jai Uttal & Friends for a deeply intimate evening of Mantra Love & Kirtan — an offering of sacred song, heart-stories, and ecstatic chanting to ignite your devotional fire as we welcome the New Year of 2026.

With his voice, harmonium, and radiant presence, Jai invites you into a realm of devotion where the mantras of ancient India open portals to inner peace, emotional healing, and spiritual joy.

In this soul-rich performance, Jai’s melodies embody the essence of Bhakti Yoga — connection through love. Whether you sing with all your heart or simply bathe in the vibration, you’ll be held in a sacred space where music becomes medicine and every note becomes a prayer.

Jai will be joined by artist Prajna Vieira on vocals and melodica and Ben Leinbach on bass and drums.

Come and sing your heart free.
Come and be nourished.

Ujjayi Breath (Victorious Breathing) Ujjayi breathing is a central and continuous component of the physical asana practice. It serves as a bridge between the physical and subtle body, helping to build internal heat, improve concentration, and maintain calm during challenging poses. 🪷

How to Practice Ujjayi Breathing for stability and calm in yoga class:

Ujjayi breathing is performed with sealed lips, breathing in out through the nose, with a gentle constriction in the back of the throat.

1. Find a comfortable seated position with a straight spine.

2. Exhale completely and relax.

3. Gently close your mouth and inhale and exhale only through your nose.
Create a subtle constriction in the throat, as if you are trying to fog a mirror with your mouth open, but keeping the lips closed.

4. Produce a soft, smooth, and steady sound that is often compared to the sound of ocean waves or a whisper. The sound should primarily be audible to you, the practitioner. It’s a gentle and quiet breath, not aggressive.

5. Equalize the duration of your inhale and exhale. In a Jivamukti class, this is often a 4-count inhale followed by a 4-count exhale.

The key is to maintain this smooth, uninterrupted breath cycle throughout your entire yoga practice, ensuring the breath remains unforced even during strenuous poses.

In our studio, you will find many images of Ganesh, the elephant-headed, round-bellied deity who is said to be the remover of obstacles and the bestower of blessings for new beginnings. In his hands, he holds a goad and a noose. It is said that the goad pushes us into situations that might be uncomfortable or bring us to our edge. The noose pulls us back before we fall off that edge, restoring our sense of faith and trust in our capacity to be saved.

In the Hindu tradition, every deity’s vahana (vehicle) carries deep meaning. Ganesh is often depicted riding on a mouse. The image of an enormous elephant man riding on a tiny mouse is kind of funny in its absurdity, but points to the bigger yogic teaching: a sense of mastery over impossibility.

At some point in each of our yogic journeys, we have come up against our edge. Our minds or our hearts may have felt like a wild mouse, running all over, searching for crumbs and making a mess. Sometimes a life situation, challenging asana or a long meditation will bring us to a place where we feel it is impossible to keep going. And yet, we do. We stay with it. Staying with what is present in the moment, with kindness and dedication, gives us a taste of our capacity to master what feel like impossible tasks. Tasks like taming a whirling mind that grasps and grips and wants to run away from difficulty.

The noose pulls us back when we are lost in the whirling. The practice grounds us in trusting the process, reminding us over and over again that obstacles are invitations for us to experience the depth of our wisdom and our truth.

This new year is an opportunity to begin again. Just like the year before, there will be peaks and valleys. Remember to celebrate the peaks. Notice what you do well, moments when you really get it right. Moments that feel good. Hold tight to your practice and the community when you are caught in the valleys. As the great Ram Dass used to say, ‘We are all just walking each other home.’

I’m looking forward to a fabulous 2026 with you!
Om Gam Ganapataye Namaha

With love,
Lesley

We’re so excited to welcome Hy Long back to Padma for a Saturday morning Vinyasa 75 class at 8:30 AM. ✨

We asked him to share with us what makes his classes uniquely transformative, and he shared: “My teaching blends mindful strength, breath, and subtle spiritual practice. I care about honoring yoga’s roots in a way that feels grounded and accessible, not abstract or dogmatic. Classes are steady and intentional, with moments of stillness, reflection, or mantra woven in, so students leave feeling not just stronger in their bodies, but clearer, more connected, and more at ease in themselves.” — Hy Long
