This patient is missing his 5th digit- his pinky finger. Try getting a grip on something with no pinky there to help out. - it's not easy!
He works at a local manufacturing plant- lifting heavy items, operating heavy machinery, and uses a hammer and other tools daily. In his free time, he enjoys fishing. A steady grip is important in his daily life.
The prosthesis he is wearing is a MCP Driver from Naked Prosthetics. It allows the patient a stronger grip, improved hand dexterity, ability to hold smaller items and safer/more efficient use of tools at work.
Design of MCP driver incorporates stainless steel linkages, custom carbon rings fit to fingers and wrist strap. The lightweight materials offer high durability and strength, are easy to put on and not at all cumbersome.
The patient has found his new device to be a lifesaver at work. He can hold a hammer and other hand tools steady and safely now. AND, with that steady grip, the fish are biting again!!

Upper Extremity Prosthetics, MCOP excels. This is a partial hand silicone prosthetic that was casted by Vandersea and painted by APS. The result/end product was overwhelming to the young lady that is the proud owner of this prosthetic. What does this partial finger allow her to do? most important to her- manicures and typing.

Every Wednesday this month, amputees everywhere are wearing their orange to show support for their limb loss and limb difference community. Together they are showing the world that they all THRIVE together, and their ordinary is extraordinary!
Together they are tougher!
Nate is rockin' the orange and his custom Limb Loss Awareness T-shirt he and his mom designed together. They will be on Capitol Hill this month advocating for Pediatric Amputees everywhere. Thanks, Nate, for wearing the orange and for inspiring everyone you meet!!
Won't you consider wearing orange on Wednesdays too?

Losing a limb is transformational. Often, an amputee has to relearn how to do basic activities of daily living. And the financial burden can be staggering. By uniting as a caring community, we can ensure every person leads a vibrant and meaningful life and is able to navigate unexpected expenses. Please join MCOP on April 24th by registering to participate in this year's 5K.

A wonderful part of being an amputee is the opportunity that many have to join and be a part of a support group.
Introducing the support group of Adventist Rehabilitation Hospital in Rockville, MD. Together they embrace their new normal by having picnics, going sailing, dining out, raising money and amputee awareness through a 5K, and just hanging out together.
Many of them have completed the Amputee Coalition's Certified Peer Visitor Program and mentor new amputees.
It's always a busy group and they are fortunate to have each other through the great times and the low times.
And what's a support group without a mascot? GiGi is happy to fill that role, along with all of Jean's dogs.

Creativity comes in many forms and having the unique opportunity to express yourself as an amputee by customizing your prosthetic sockets is something that is very special.
Butterflies, colorful mixes, family history, flags, flowers, favorite sports teams, superhero's wolves, wrestling, and even that wooden leg look. It's all possible!
So, whatever our patients want, our lab technicians are there to bring their visions to life one custom socket at a time!
Thanks to the technicians in MCOP labs for sharing these great examples of custom sockets. Do you have a custom socket you want to share? Post a picture in the comments!

Meet Sean Cullinane, 46yrs old, married dad of 3 children.
In 2003, he suffered a compound leg fracture that went from bad to worse. After an undiagnosed staph infection that caused the titanium rod in his leg to snap, 14-16 surgeries to try and salvage his leg so that he could wak again, more infections, more leg breaks and now 31 surgeries, he decided to amputate.
On May 28th, 2021 Sean became a Below Knee Amputee and gained a new outlook on life. It took awhile but once he was up and mobile again he knew there was nothing he couldn't do.
Sean works with Waryk at MCOP Boston and in his words "the entire gang at MCOP is involved and that's one of the main reasons I felt so good about choosing them for my leg"
Thanks Sean for being a warrior and a valued patient at MCOP Boston!
