Epidurals and shoulder dystocia:
In a study investigating fetal measurements taken during ultrasound and connection to shoulder dystocia, researchers found no relationship between the measurements and a baby’s chance of experiencing shoulder dystocia, concluding that fetal biometrics “have limited ability to predict shoulder dystocia and lack clinical usefulness.”
BUT what DID they find? With data from nearly 1,700 women, the only thing associated with a higher chance of shoulder dystocia was whether or not mom had an epidural. Women who had epidurals were more likely to experience shoulder dystocia.

A fascinating connection drawn to your baby's microbiome.

Why do some babies react to perceived danger more than others? According to new research, part of the answer may be found in a surprising place: an infant's digestive system.

"Breastfeeding for more than a year and feeding two children in tandem did not adversely affect the quality of breast milk. On the contrary, research indicates that the composition evolves as the duration of lactation increases, which is dictated by the changing needs of children.

"Studies in the TBM group before and after weaning indicate that the breast milk met the nutritional requirements of both the older and younger child. The composition of breastmilk, in terms of macronutrients, changes after the weaning, taking into account the nutritional requirements of the younger child."

Breastfeeding is a gold standard of feeding of newborns and infants. Tandem breastfeeding (TBF) is feeding two children of different ages at the same time. The knowledge about the composition of human milk in prolonged lactation is still scarce. Milk from tandem breastfeeding women and after weaning...

"Neonatal antibiotic exposure is associated with a long-term gut microbiome perturbation and may result in reduced growth in boys during the first six years of life while antibiotic use later in childhood is associated with increased body mass index."

"Perturbations of the gut microbiome resulting from antibiotic exposure provide a potential causal mechanism between neonatal antibiotic exposure and reduced childhood growth."

In this study, Omry Koren, Samuli Rautava and colleagues report a sex-specific association between neonatal antibiotic exposure and weight and height gain during the first six years of life and showing that boys but not girls exposed to neonatal antibiotics exhibit impaired weight and height develop...

"The study found that children born to mothers with low thyroid hormone levels during the first trimester of pregnancy had a 28% increased risk of being diagnosed with ADHD later."

WEDNESDAY, Oct. 21, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- Low levels of thyroid hormone during pregnancy may contribute to the development of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in the child, new research suggests. "Acetaminophen detection in meconium . . . was associated with nearly 2.5-fold increased odds of ADHD at ages 6 to 7 years . . . . [H]igh levels of acetaminophen detected in meconium increased the odds of ADHD more than 4-fold."

This birth cohort study examines the association between prenatal acetaminophen exposure measured in meconium and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in children aged 6 to 7 years, along with the potential for mediation by functional brain connectivity.
