Identifying and Treating Seasonal Affective Disorder

Now that Daylight Saving Time has ended, we are faced with shorter days and fewer hours of sunlight. For people with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), this time of year may bring about feelings of sadness and depression, decreased energy, malaise, difficulty concentrating, and changes in appetite. Individuals with SAD may also find themselves drinking more alcohol or using other substances to cope with emotional pain. Seasonal Affective Disorder is four times more likely to affect women than men, and it tends to first emerge in early adulthood. This article discusses a number of treatment options for people with SAD including bright light therapy, vitamin D supplementation, medication, spending more time outdoors in the sunshine, and cognitive behavioral therapy. If you believe that you experience SAD, please reach out to a mental health professional or your physician to discuss treatment options that are best for you.

In the article Responding to Thoughts That Drive Difficult Emotions, Dr. Minden discusses the importance of attending to unhealthy thoughts that are associated with intense emotions. The author encourages us to clarify the thoughts that led to the emotion, practice flexibility (as opposed to rigidity) in how we interpret the thoughts, and to implement a growth mindset in responding to our understanding of the thoughts.
