Feeling anger is normal and ok, but for many trauma survivors it can be a scary emotion and one that is hard to direct in a healthy direction for so many reasons. You won’t ever be able to avoid feeling angry so here are some great tips to help direct the anger so it’s not harmful. I’ll be doing a podcast on this so leave any questions in the comments!

Emotions emit energy and can be felt and alter the atmosphere in a room. I’m sure you’ve felt when someone was mad at you and the room feels “off”? The best way to deal with these situations is bring it out into the open no matter how uncomfortable things feel. Avoiding the hard conversations or speaking up may temporarily feel good but in the long run will cause more harm than good.

We are not good mind readers, and often we create narratives centered around our fears and biases which can greatly affect relationships, your mental health, and your environment. The more we build on these assumptions and narratives, the stronger the toxic thought grows!

How do you approach difficult conversations? What have you found helpful when speaking up or sharing something that’s hard?

This is a full-on emotion researcher geek out with Susan David on how emotional granularity and agility benefit us as individuals and as leaders. This is such a GREAT conversation on the new episode of the Dare to Lead podcast. http://bit.ly/3bO1qbT

Instead of saying "use your words"...

The key to processing an argument is to first talk about what happened to understand what went wrong, how you each were feeling, and what could have prevented the discussion from ending in such a negative way.

Try to understand your partner’s reality and not to argue for your own perspective. Take turns sharing what each other was feeling and what may have triggered those feelings by using the "What Triggered Me?" chart.
