Today I voted 🗳️

As a mother, I voted for my children. For my daughters to have the same rights I did and not to go backwards.

As a fertility specialist, I voted for my patients. I voted for their right to choose… to choose whether or not they pursue treatment like IVF, to choose to be single mothers and fathers, for my LGBTQ+ patients to have every right to build their families, for women to have access to contraception if they choose not to get pregnant, for my patients to have access to care if they suffer a miscarriage, for the women who have to make the difficult decision to end a non-viable pregnancy when all they ever wanted was a child. Everyone should have the ability to work with their doctor and choose for themselves. No politician should choose for them.

Please choose to vote! It absolutely matters. However you choose to vote, make no mistake that reproductive rights are on the ballot and this election will affect you or someone you love. 💙

Don’t forget to vote today! Vote for reproductive rights. Vote for my patients, for my daughters, for your daughters, sisters, friends… vote for personal health decisions to stay between a patient and their doctors. Vote like the future depends on it because it does for our generation and those to come!

🔸

The last time I participated in Advocacy Day we were on the hill, shaking hands and meeting face to face. But was not going to stop us from speaking up for our patients. I was able to work with the amazing Maryland delegation during Advocacy Day!

Thank you to , , for taking the time to discuss these important issues:

🔸Access to Infertility Treatment and Care Act (S.1461/HR 2803)

🔸Adoption Tax Credit Refundability Act (S.1652/HR 2965)

🔸Women Veterans & Families Health Services Act (S 319/HR 955)

🔸Every Child Deserves a Family Act (S.1791/HR 3114)

🔸PCOS Awareness Month Resolution, (S. Res 317/H. Res 146)

🔸Supporting Medical Research Funding for the NIH and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), where most of the research related to reproductive health and infertility is supported.
If you have a moment, write a letter or reach out to your senators and representatives to voice your support!

HSGs & Tubal Factor Infertility
👩🏽‍⚕️
As we resume treatment, more patients are completing fertility testing
🔸
One important test for patients is an HSG aka a hysterosalpingogram or a tubal dye test. This a very common test but sometimes can feel daunting because it is unfamiliar so I wanted to talk about the procedure and debunk some of the myths
🔸
The test is done after your period ends but before ovulation. It starts as a speculum exam (just like a PAP smear) and a cannula is placed into the opening of the cervix. A fluoroscope (the machine that looks like a C in images 2 & 3) takes X-ray images while a small amount of dye is instilled into the uterus and then moves through the tubes (Image 4). If the dye flows through the tubes and spills out, it means the tube is open!
🔸
If one tube is blocked... you can still conceive if you ovulate on the same side as the open tube. On occasion your doctor may recommend surgery or fertility treatment. Sometimes a spasm of the tube can mimic a blockage and the tube is actually open.
🔸
If both tubes are blocked... your doctor may discuss trying to open up the tubes or doing IVF to get around the blockage
🔸
Some studies have shown an increase in pregnancy rates over the next 3 months so they may be some treatment benefit. I have had quite a few patients get pregnant 🤰🏻 that same cycle! 👍🏽
🔸
🔸
Myth - the test takes a long time.

Actually, the procedure usually takes under 5 minutes
🔸
Myth - it is a very painful test

In reality, most women compare it to mild-moderate menstrual cramps that resolve in 5-10 minutes. I recommend that patients take a dose of ibuprofen 💊 or something similar 30 minutes beforehand to help with the cramping. Someone once told me that dark chocolate 🍫 helps. I don’t know if it’s true but it can’t hurt! 😋
🔸
Myth - the HSG emits a lot of radiation

The amount of radiation is very low as well as the risk of complications which is around 1%. Usually your doctor or others helping will wear a fancy lead apron like this one since they are doing many HSGs in a row!
