February is American Heart Month, a time to focus on everyday habits that help protect heart health. While heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the U.S., small, consistent changes especially in nutrition can make a meaningful difference.

A balanced eating pattern that includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats can help lower the risk of heart disease and stroke. What we eat also plays a key role in managing cholesterol, blood pressure, and overall wellness.

Heart-healthy eating doesn’t have to be complicated. Simple choices made over time can support long-term heart health for you and your family.

✨ Provider Spotlight: Mary Gartin, ARNP ✨

For 13 years, Mary Gartin, ARNP has been caring for families at Jefferson County Health Center building relationships, listening closely, and helping patients feel confident about their health.

Inspired by her mother’s career as a nurse, Mary knew early on she wanted to help people. That calling led her to family practice, where she enjoys getting to know patients over time and supporting them through all stages of life.

Mary believes good healthcare starts with listening. She takes time to understand what matters most to her patients, respects their wishes, and works with them to manage health concerns in a way that fits their lives.

When she’s not at the clinic, Mary enjoys gardening, reading, listening to music, and spending time with her pets. 🌿📚🐾

We’re proud to have Mary as part of the JCHC care team and grateful for the compassion and experience she brings to our patients every day.
