The rehabilitation of the Oregon Supreme Court Building stands as a model for how historic preservation and forward-looking resilience can coexist within a single architectural vision. A triple-friction-pendulum base isolation system was inserted beneath the building, effectively decoupling the superstructure from ground motion. This move transforms the foundation into a dynamic interface: in a Cascadia Subduction Zone event, the ground may oscillate laterally up to two feet while the building above remains comparatively stable.

In this clip from Episode 165, Travis Albrecht, Studio Director and Principal at Gensler, explains how a central courtyard at Fifth + Tillery does far more than bring daylight into the building. What began as a move to open up the interior ultimately became a key piece of the project’s environmental strategy.

Rain gardens within the courtyard filter stormwater runoff, while cisterns capture rainwater from the roof and reuse it for irrigation. A runnel carrying recycled water flows through the courtyard, introducing the sound and movement of water while helping cool the space and create a more comfortable microclimate.

The result is a courtyard that blends performance, sustainability, and wellness into the everyday experience of the workplace.

At Long Beach Airport, relocating baggage claim and ticketing into new structures unlocked the historic terminal’s potential to stand on its own once again. What had been constrained by decades of additions was reframed as a civic icon, visible and experienced from all four sides.

Ketchum Fire Department | Sun Valley Idaho

For the new Ketchum Fire Department in Sun Valley, Idaho, performance was non negotiable. The station needed overhead doors that could handle extreme mountain winds, deliver high thermal performance, and align with a clean, contemporary architectural vision.

Amarr delivered four 2042 Extra Heavy Duty Steel Sectional Doors, each engineered with 2 inch, 19.4 R value foamed in place polyurethane insulation and reinforced for 141 mph wind load protection. The design integrates aluminum full view sections with tempered glass, creating a balance of durability, daylighting, and visibility within the apparatus bays.

The result is a door system that supports LEED Silver certification goals, maintains comfortable interior temperatures through Idaho winters, and reinforces the station’s strong industrial aesthetic. Beyond performance, the project team praised Amarr for ex*****on and collaboration, noting a smooth process from specification through installation.

The most recent phase focuses on restoring the historic terminal, a Streamline Moderne landmark, by peeling back decades of alterations to reveal the clarity and elegance of its original design.
