Episode 169 | Precast Concrete | Westville State Prison
👥 Elevatus Architecture

In this clip from Episode 169, Craig Armstrong, Partner at Elevatus Architecture, explains how even a simple opening in the building envelope becomes a critical vulnerability in a correctional facility.

Every window, door, or pe*******on is treated as a potential breach point. Standard systems are not enough. The team had to specify highly specialized, attack-resistant assemblies that could withstand extreme abuse while maintaining performance.

It’s a constant balance between security and efficiency. While energy performance still matters, every decision is filtered through the lens of risk and control, where even a small opening can become an opportunity for failure.

In this episode, Cherise is joined by Craig Armstrong, Partner at Elevatus Architecture in Fort Wayne, Indiana. They discuss the Westville State Prison in Westville, Indiana.

Set against the flat, open landscape of northern Indiana, the new Westville State Prison emerges as a replacement for an aging institution and as a comprehensive rethinking of what a correctional environment can be. Led by Elevatus Architecture and utilizing precast concrete in its design, the project confronts the immense logistical and social demands of a 4,200-bed facility with an architectural response that is at once infrastructural in scale and human-centered in intent.

Client Spotlight: Fire Trol
Salesforce Transit Center | San Francisco, CA

Salesforce Transit Center represents a modern paradigm for transit-based urban development, bringing together multiple transportation systems within a five block, light filled public space. Inspired by historic hubs like Grand Central Terminal, the project serves as both a critical infrastructure node and a central gathering place, complete with a 5.4 acre rooftop park that anchors the surrounding neighborhood.

Projects of this scale demand complete confidence in the structural systems behind them. That is where Fire Trol’s focus on reliability becomes essential. By manufacturing column systems with steel and concrete that meet or exceed UL standards and project specifications, Fire Trol supports the level of performance and consistency required in large, complex builds where safety and long term durability are non negotiable.

The result is a project that brings together ambitious design and dependable construction.

ARCAT is proud to partner with manufacturers like Fire Trol who deliver the reliability and performance that complex, high impact projects depend on.

Client Spotlight: Johns Manville
The Sleeper House | Jefferson County, Colorado

Originally designed in the 1960s, the iconic Sleeper House is one of Colorado’s most recognizable homes. While visually striking, the home struggled with extreme heat loss, high utility costs, and interior temperatures that made it difficult to comfortably inhabit. The unique concrete shell construction left large gaps with little to no insulation, creating significant performance challenges.

To address this, Johns Manville products were used as part of a comprehensive energy efficiency upgrade. More than 15,000 lbs. of formaldehyde-free fiberglass insulation was installed throughout the home, carefully selected to perform within the structure’s irregular cavities and non standard conditions. The solution helped close critical thermal gaps while maintaining long term stability without shrinking or settling.

The result is a home that now matches its architectural significance with real performance. Interior temperatures are consistent, energy costs are significantly reduced, and the space is finally comfortable and livable year round.

ARCAT is proud to partner with manufacturers like Johns Manville who help bring performance, efficiency, and long term value to even the most complex and unconventional projects.

Glass Courtyard | Stealth House

👥

In this clip from Episode 167, Scott Specth, Founding Partner at Specht Novak Architects, breaks down the exterior strategy behind the Stealth House. The majority of the home is wrapped in a straightforward assembly, a ZIP system with a rainscreen and corrugated Corten steel siding, creating a durable and minimal outer shell across three sides of the house.

At the front, that simplicity shifts into a more deliberate composition. A garage door, a central panel, and a flush steel entry door are carefully aligned to read as a cohesive façade. What began as a conceptual placeholder in early renderings evolved into a glass tile panel, introducing texture and abstraction while maintaining the home’s restrained, understated character.

It’s a precise balance of utility and design, where even the simplest elements are treated as part of a larger architectural composition.

Glass Courtyard | Stealth House

👥 Specht Novak Architects

In this episode, Cherise is joined by Scott Specht, Founding Partner at Specht Novak Architects in Austin, to discuss the Stealth House in Austin.

Tucked along a gravel alley behind a row of traditional homes in downtown Austin, the Stealth House by Scott Specht of Specht Novak Architects is deliberately elusive. From the street, the 1,100-square-foot residence reveals almost nothing: a low, rust-colored steel façade, punctuated by the absence of outward-facing windows. Crossing the threshold reveals a radically different spatial experience. Sunlight pours through floor-to-ceiling glass that frames two verdant interior courtyards. Rather than opening outward toward the street, the house turns inward, creating a private landscape that mediates between architecture and nature.
