Black women face higher risks in childbirth, with increased rates of complications and maternal deaths in the US. This is often due to systemic biases and unequal care in healthcare settings.
Doulas can make a difference by acting as advocates and ensuring clear communication between the birthing person and medical staff. They provide emotional and physical support tailored to cultural needs, which helps reduce stress and improve birth outcomes.
Training doulas from communities of color supports culturally relevant care, creating trust and comfort. While doulas aren’t a full solution to systemic issues, their presence empowers mothers and helps bridge gaps in care.
If you have Medi-Cal, doula support is available at no cost. Let’s work together to support healthy births and stronger families.
