Fallโ€™s here. Time to grab your boo, the pup, or the kiddos and go for a walkโ€”even if, like me, your kiddo () is 6โ€™1โ€ and has the stride of a giraffe.

A recent 2025 study found that adults between the ages of 40 and 79 who walked at least 3,800 steps a day reduced their risk of developing dementia by 25%. Those who averaged closer to 10,000 steps saw their risk cut in half!

Thereโ€™s no โ€œcorrectโ€ walking technique, but here are two of my favorite tips that I share with clients to level up your walking game:

MIND ๐Ÿง 
Brains get mushy unless you force adaptation. Increase neuroplasticity by syncing the same side arm and leg as you walk.

Yep, it feels weird ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ

But if you can stick with it for five minutes, it will stimulate both brain hemispheres, build new motor-function pathways, and boost coordination, balance, and focus.

BODY ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿพ
Posture degrades over time. Battle it with this great method from the Alexander Technique:
Picture yourself as a tower. Your feet, knees, hips, pelvis, core, arms, neck, and head are all bricks which need to align properly to keep you upright.

Start at the bottom with your feet and โ€œstackโ€ each body part upon the last, making sure theyโ€™re all balanced.

This will keep your spine aligned, force proper posture, and build core strength while you stroll!

"The wound is the place where the Light enters you."-Rumi.

Blind spots... those impulsively self-destructive, shadowy areas of our awareness that mysteriously 'pop up' as unwanted habits, are simultaneously also fantastic beacons of insight into why we do the things we do (and how to stop doing them).

They show us through our own reoccurring thoughts and actions where the pain is, and point to where our inner work still needs to be done.

When you stop turning away from your blind spots and instead have the courage to gaze into them head on, you begin to realize that the goal isn't figuring out *how* to stop consuming that bowl of ice cream (glass of wineโ€ฆ puff of weedโ€ฆ) each night.

The goal is figuring out why you do it to begin with.
