Autism like most neurological differences was first defined by people who are not in fact Autistic. This led to many misunderstandings as to what Autism truly is. Autism advocacy was done by parents, professionals and loved ones that also did not understand. When you don't understand it is hard to advocate effectively. "I think the most important and challenging tip I can give to clients is to be honest with their therapist. Different clients may have different needs or goals that they want to achieve through the therapeutic process. Being honest about what you are looking for out of the service allows the clinician to best work with you to meet these goals. Being honest about your perception of the interventions being used may help your therapist better understand your needs and what interventions you will respond to. Being honest about your feelings regarding the process or about your clinician can reinforce the therapeutic alliance in some cases, or serve as the catalyst for you being matched with a different clinician better suited to meet your needs if that is necessary. I cannot think of a time that a client has voiced concerns to me and I have taken it personally, instead it has often opened the door for richer conversations, improved service, and deeper understanding on both sides of the alliance. Regardless of the situation, the therapeutic alliance is like any other human relationship with honesty and communication at its very core."
