If you’ve never had a colonic, it’s easy to assume it’s a “one and done” process. In reality, colon hydrotherapy follows a precise progression, each session building on the last.
The process unfolds in four distinct phases: flushing out recent waste, breaking down deeper layers of impaction, releasing the mucoid plaque that coats the colon wall, and finally reaching full hydration and healing.
Progress isn’t random, it’s visible and measurable. We consistently see clear signs that show exactly where a client is in the process. The color, texture, and form of what passes through the waste view tube act as reliable indicators of each phase.
This is why colonics are never about a single session. Years, often decades, of buildup cannot be undone in one hour. Step by step, the colon is progressively cleared, absorption is restored, and long term vitality becomes possible.
This is why a series matters, and why your results compound, session after session.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐇𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬:
The first phase of colon hydrotherapy focuses on clearing what your body hasn’t been able to release on its own.
𝟏. 𝐈𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐟:
Recent stool, trapped gas, and the toxins they carry, sometimes sitting for days or even weeks, are gently evacuated, easing pressure and heaviness in the abdomen.
𝟐. 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐮𝐩:
Gentle infusions of purified water, followed by controlled releases, soak into the hardened layers of impaction compressed against the colon wall and lodged in its folds and pockets. This isn’t about hydrating your body, it’s about hydrating the impaction itself until it begins to soften and fragment in preparation for deeper release.
𝟑. 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬:
By alternating between flushing recent stool and hydrating the impaction pressed into the colon wall, Phase One creates immediate relief and sets the stage for the progressive clearing that follows in later phases.
𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐭𝐬:
Clients describe instant lightness after Phase One. Abdominal pressure eases, bloating decreases, and they walk out feeling as if a weight has finally been lifted. For many, it’s the first undeniable sign that their body can release more than they thought possible.
𝐏𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧:
What you see released in Phase One is primarily recent stool. Eliminations often appear as larger, round pieces in a normal brown color, mixed with brown water. Bright yellow liquid is also common, this is bile and stomach acids being flushed.
These eliminations are not yet the hardened buildup. They represent recent stool and acids that regular bowel movements haven’t fully cleared. Seeing these releases confirms the colon is beginning with what’s most available before progressing into deeper layers.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐇𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬:
Phase Two doesn’t happen in a single session, it unfolds gradually across a series. This is when the hardened impaction that has been building for years finally begins to break down and move out.
𝟏. 𝐇𝐲𝐝𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐮𝐩 𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐠𝐨:
The layers of impaction softened during Phase One begin to separate from the colon wall and release. This is when deeper, older material starts to evacuate.
𝟐. 𝐓𝐨𝐱𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐮𝐭:
As these layers break apart and leave, they take with them toxic waste that has been locked inside the body, waste linked to bloating, fatigue, brain fog, skin issues, and sluggish digestion.
𝟑. 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬:
Over successive sessions, this stage often becomes a turning point. The colon cycles between hydrating impaction (Phase One) and releasing it (Phase Two). That back and forth process is what gradually clears the layers that have been accumulating for decades.
𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐭𝐬:
Clients describe Phase Two as the stage where changes become undeniable. Bloating decreases significantly, digestion smooths out, and energy levels rise in a way that feels sustainable. Many say this is the moment they realize their body is finally letting go of what has been holding them back for years.
𝐏𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧:
Eliminations in Phase Two look very different from Phase One. Stool is less formed, and what comes out often appears as large, dark brown waves of thick liquid. Mixed within are irregular stool fragments, darker brown to nearly black.
This stage shows the layers of impaction breaking free. The sludge like material indicates that old buildup, once softened by Phase One hydration, is now separating from the colon wall. Each layer that releases tends to be darker than the last, confirming the body is moving deeper into material that has been lodged for years.
𝐏𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐞: 𝐑𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐮𝐜𝐨𝐢𝐝 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐪𝐮𝐞
𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐇𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬:
Once the hardened impaction has been softened, broken down, and released in Phases One and Two, what remains is the mucoid plaque, a dense, sticky coating the body built along the colon wall to shield itself from the toxins trapped in those impacted layers.
𝟏. 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐪𝐮𝐞:
With the toxic impaction cleared, the underlying mucoid plaque becomes visible. This adhesive layer clings tightly to the colon wall and can extend the full length of the large intestine.
𝟐. 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠:
Through the controlled, repeated filling cycles of colon hydrotherapy, steady water pressure gradually penetrates the plaque. Over time, the connective threads anchoring it to the colon wall weaken. The process is steady and measured, it doesn’t rip or tear, but methodically and gently loosens the plaque.
𝟑. 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐞𝐯𝐚𝐜𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧:
The release is often striking. Clients sometimes see rope like strands, long sections, or smaller fragments passing through the waste view tube. These are usually darker than impacted waste, deep brown or black, and are unmistakable signs that decades of toxic layering are finally leaving the body.
𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬:
The end of Phase Three is a breakthrough milestone. At this stage, the colon is finally free from the mucoid plaque it created as a shield against toxins in impacted waste. While protective, this coating also blocked water and nutrient absorption and prevented a healthy microbiome from establishing. Once removed, the colon wall can function as designed again: proper absorption is restored, and the foundation for microbial balance is rebuilt.
𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐭𝐬:
By the end of Phase Three, clients describe a true breakthrough. The lingering heaviness is gone, replaced by a profound sense of lightness and clarity that feels like a reset at the core. Mental focus sharpens alongside physical ease, creating a deep sense of renewal and freedom that simply wasn’t possible before.
𝐏𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧:
In Phase Three, eliminations are the darkest and most dramatic. Releases often appear as thick, black or very dark brown sludge, denser and heavier than anything from Phase Two. Alongside this, clients often see thin slices or flakes of black or dark gray material, sometimes small and subtle, but released in large amounts at once.
At times, longer rope like strands appear, even taking the shape of the colon itself. These are clear signs of mucoid plaque detaching after being softened and loosened through repeated filling and soaking cycles. This stage confirms the shift from clearing impaction to shedding the protective coating itself, the final barrier between the colon and full restoration.
𝐏𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐫: 𝐇𝐲𝐝𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 & 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠
𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐇𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬:
Once the hardened impaction and mucoid plaque have been fully cleared, the colon can finally return to its designed function: deeply hydrating the body and supporting true restoration.
𝟏. 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐞 𝐡𝐲𝐝𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐛𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐬:
With no barriers blocking absorption, the colon wall can fully draw in water and return it to circulation. This is hydration at the deepest level, reaching tissues that may have been deprived for years.
𝟐. 𝐀 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐞:
Unlike Phases One through Three, which focus on detox and removal, Phase Four is about rebuilding. Over several sessions, the body uses this stage to rehydrate cells, restore balance, and initiate lasting repair.
𝟑. 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡:
With the plaque and impaction gone, the colon wall is no longer coated in barriers that disrupt balance. At this point, the colon can finally support the growth of a stable, healthy microbiome, the ecosystem of bacteria that underpins digestion, immunity, and overall vitality.
𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬:
Phase Four marks the shift from cleansing to healing. Water is no longer just flushing waste, it is actively restoring the body at its core. This is the stage where long-term balance and resilience take root.
𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐭𝐬:
By the end of Phase Four, clients describe feeling fundamentally renewed. Energy stabilizes, digestion becomes more efficient, and skin clears as hydration and absorption return to full function. Many also notice a deep emotional calm and sense of balance they haven’t felt in years, the result of both full cellular hydration and a restored microbiome taking root.
𝐏𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧:
In Phase Four, eliminations are minimal. The water that passes is usually clear or nearly clear, with only small traces of very recent stool. Unlike earlier phases, there is no sludge, no dark fragments, and no heavy releases, the colon has been fully cleared of impacted waste and mucoid plaque.
This stage confirms the shift from cleansing to restoration. What appears in the waste view tube shows the colon is no longer purging old material but is instead ready to absorb water deeply into the tissue, supporting hydration, repair, and microbiome balance.

Colon hydrotherapy isn’t a quick fix, it’s a process. Each phase builds on the last, steadily moving your body from release to renewal. This isn’t theory or guesswork; the results are visible in the waste view tube and felt in real time as your colon progresses session by session.
There is no way to predict exactly how many sessions it will take for each phase, or how many are required to complete all four. Every body carries its own history, and each colon responds at its own pace. What we recommend, based on consistent observation, is two to three colonics per week until you reach Phase Four. Once there, it typically takes three to four sessions to fully hydrate at the deepest levels and stabilize the benefits.
This is why a series matters. Years, often decades, of buildup cannot be undone in a single session. With consistency, though, the body always responds. This is not detox for detox’s sake; it is the restoration of your colon’s original design, the foundation for true vitality.
And no matter how you choose to show up for yourself, whether you commit fully or move step by step, know this: at Iowa Colonics, we are here for you 100%. Our role is to walk with you through every stage, providing attentive care, safety, and support until your body reaches the freedom, balance, and vitality it was created for.
