This is a picture I’ve held onto for a while. It’s my daughter helping me at a funeral service. She has grown up around this work, even living with us in funeral homes, and over the years she’s seen me leave often and miss activities and events. In this photo, the service is taking place, and we are sitting quietly in the back of the church. That day, she got to see firsthand how we care for families, how we treat those who attend, and how we honor the person they loved and lost.

Later she told me she hadn’t realized everything that went into what I do. She knew I worked with families, but she didn’t fully understand all the different roles I play or the many ways we support people through every part of the services we offer. To her, I had just always “left a lot.” Being there that day helped her see the bigger picture and understand a little more why I left all those times before.

She did a wonderful job that day, and I cherish the time I got to share with her, working side by side.

It was a reminder that meaningful work often happens quietly, in moments most people never see.
