🚨 Not All Tongue Tie Releases Are Created Equal 🚨
When it comes to infant frenectomies, partial releases = partial results.
A tongue tie isn’t just a little piece of tissue—it’s a restriction that can extend deeper than what the eye can see. If the release isn’t full and complete, babies can continue to struggle with:
• Poor latch 🤱
• Clicking or leaking during feeds
• Reflux-like symptoms
• Gassiness + colic
• Shallow breathing patterns
• Long-term airway and development issues
👉 A true functional release addresses the entire restriction—not just the visible portion.
That means: ✔️ Releasing to proper depth
✔️ Allowing full tongue elevation + mobility
✔️ Supporting nasal breathing and proper oral posture
✔️ Setting the foundation for optimal growth and development
But here’s the key 👇
A great release is only part of the equation.
💡 Preparation + follow-up matter just as much.
We work closely with lactation consultants and myofunctional therapists to ensure baby can use their new mobility.
Because the goal isn’t just to “clip a tie”…
It’s to help that child breathe, feed, sleep, and thrive.

The Final Step: Functional Frenuloplasty 👅✨
When we talk about guided growth and development, expanders and appliances are only part of the story.
Many children develop narrow jaws, crowded teeth, and poor sleep/breathing because the tongue isn’t resting where it should — on the roof of the mouth. When the tongue sits low in the mouth, the upper jaw doesn’t receive the natural growth stimulus it needs. The result? Narrow arches, airway restriction, and poor sleep quality.
Our treatment helps restore the architecture first.
Using expanders and growth-guiding appliances, we help the jaws return to a more ideal size and arch form so there is space for teeth, the tongue, and the airway.
But here’s the key 👇
If we don’t address WHY the tongue had poor posture in the first place, relapse can happen.
That’s why the final stage of treatment is often a functional frenuloplasty.
Releasing a restrictive tongue tie allows the tongue to finally rest on the palate and support nasal breathing, which is essential for long-term stability, healthy airway development, and continued facial growth.
This patient experienced incredible changes during treatment — including growing over 6 inches in height while we were working on their airway and jaw development.
Could that growth spurt be because the body could finally sleep, breathe, and recover properly?
We can’t say for certain… but we have a pretty good idea. 😉
When breathing improves, the body thrives.
Growth.
Sleep.
Development.
Everything is connected.
More on this process coming soon. Stay tuned. 🌱

Orthodontics doesn’t always have to take years to see meaningful change.
These photos show early progress from dual arch expansion — and this case is not finished yet.
In just a few months, we’ve already seen significant changes in jaw width and tooth positioning. When we guide growth during the right developmental window, the body often responds quickly because we’re working with biology, not against it.
Dual arch expansion focuses on developing the upper and lower jaws together, helping create:
• More room for adult teeth
• Improved arch form
• Better skeletal balance
• Increased space for the airway
Instead of forcing teeth into a small jaw, we focus on growing the foundation first.
What you’re seeing here is simply the early transformation in jaw size and tooth position as the arches begin to develop.
And remember — this case is still in progress.
We’re only months into treatment, not years.
Imagine where this child will be as growth continues.
We’ll be sharing much more about how dual arch expansion works, when to intervene, and why growth guidance can change a child’s trajectory.
Stay tuned.

Most people think orthodontics is just about straight teeth.
But when we look at growing children, the real opportunity is much bigger.
Dual arch expansion works with a child’s natural growth to gently guide the development of the upper and lower jaws. By creating more space in the dental arches, we can influence the skeletal architecture of the face — not just the teeth.
When the jaws grow to a more ideal size, several important things can improve:
• More room for adult teeth
• A wider, more stable smile
• Improved airway volume and breathing
• Better facial balance and symmetry
The result often isn’t just straighter teeth — it’s a face that grows more harmoniously and naturally.
This post simply shows a before and after comparison of jaw width and tooth positioning. You can see how creating space early changes the trajectory of development.
And this is just the beginning.
Over the next few posts we’ll be diving deeper into:
• How dual arch expansion works
• Why timing during growth is so powerful
• The connection between jaw development, airway health, and sleep
If you’re a parent, this is something you’ll want to understand.
Stay tuned.

Another episode of: Great dentistry… terrible Instagram content.
Please enjoy this highly educational potato-quality video. 🥔📹
Today’s case: Crownlay on tooth #19.
This tooth had a large old mercury (amalgam) filling that was beginning to fail and cause fracturing of the surrounding tooth structure. When fillings get this big, the tooth can act like it’s wedged apart over time.
Instead of jumping straight to a full crown, we restored it with a crownlay.
A crownlay allows us to remove the failing restoration and fractured areas while preserving as much healthy enamel as possible, especially along the margins. That preserved enamel helps create a stronger bond and better long-term seal compared to cutting the tooth down for a full crown.
Old filling out.
Fractures stabilized.
Healthy enamel preserved.
Conservative dentistry > aggressive dentistry. 🦷

Breaking News: Dentist who cares about enamel… still bad at Instagram.
Please excuse the potato-quality video — my clinical work is HD, my social media skills are not. 🥔📹
This is a buccal inlay on tooth #18.
The patient was originally recommended a crown, but that would have required removing a lot of perfectly healthy enamel. Instead, we chose a conservative inlay to preserve as much natural tooth structure as possible.
This area is notoriously hard to see and restore well, and a traditional composite filling here can be difficult to seal long-term. An indirect inlay gives us a much more precise fit and stronger seal, especially in a spot like this.
Less drilling.
More enamel saved.
Better seal.
Sometimes the best dentistry is just being more conservative. 🦷

Great info about lip ties! Please give Eastern Shore Myo a follow to learn all about my functional therapy!

See that tissue between the top front teeth? That’s called the labial frenum.

In some children, it attaches low and thick — creating tension between the two front teeth and contributing to spacing.

But here’s the important part 👇

Not all gaps mean a lip tie needs to be released.
And not all lip ties cause problems.

What we look for:
✔️ Blanching when the lip is lifted
✔️ Tension in the tissue
✔️ Difficulty with oral hygiene
✔️ Gum recession risk
✔️ Persistent diastema
✔️ Functional issues (speech, feeding, oral posture)

In growing children, timing is everything.
Many midline gaps close naturally.

💡 The key isn’t just what it looks like — it’s how it functions.

If you’re unsure whether your child’s lip attachment is developmental or restrictive, an airway-focused evaluation can help guide next steps.

Before ➝ After: Growth-Guided Expansion That Goes Beyond Teeth

These photos are only 6 months apart.
In the before, we noticed early warning signs that matter:
• Not enough room for incoming adult teeth
• Crowding already presenting at a young age
• Narrow arches limiting proper jaw development
These aren’t just orthodontic concerns — they’re growth concerns.
With dual arch expansion, we focused on developing the jaws first so the face, teeth, and airway could grow the way they’re designed to.
In the after, notice more than just the smile:
• Increased space for adult teeth to erupt properly
• Improved facial balance
• Clear improvement in eye symmetry — particularly the left eye, which appeared less symmetric prior to expansion
• Improved airway volume and better sleep quality
Facial symmetry isn’t cosmetic.
Symmetry is beauty — and beauty is health.
When we guide growth early, we’re not forcing teeth into place later — we’re creating the space the body needs to develop naturally.
This is airway-focused, development-driven orthodontics.
And this is why early evaluation matters.

✨ Smile Makeover — WITHOUT Implants ✨

This beautiful transformation was achieved without placing any implants — per the patient’s wishes.

She preferred to avoid anything in her jaw bones, so we created a custom pathway using biologically supportive care and biocompatible materials.

Here’s how we did it:

• strategic extractions
• bone grafting to rebuild support
• PRF (platelet rich fibrin) to speed healing naturally
• Ozone therapy to sterilize + enhance tissue recovery
• final restorations using biocompatible high-strength ceramics (no metal)

The result?
Healthy tissue. A beautiful, confident smile.
No implants. No metal.

At Tooth & Co — we always honor patient values + biology first. There’s more than one way to rebuild a smile… and your path should be the one that aligns with YOUR body and YOUR goals. 💛
