Teamwork makes the dream work!

We had an amazing quarterly meeting with the Fairhope Pediatrics team at the Magnolia Co-working space in downtown Fairhope last week, and it was so good to have everyone in one place.

Getting the full team together to talk through our vision, set goals for the months ahead, and focus on how we can keep improving for our patient families always feels amazing.

We’re SO proud of our team and grateful for the way everyone shows up for our patients and for each other.

Is your baby bundled too much? Or not enough?

During winter, infants should typically sleep in one more layer than an adult would wear to be comfortable in the same room. A breathable onesie plus a sleep sack is usually perfect.

Avoid hats, blankets, and loose bedding in the crib to prevent overheating and reduce SIDS risk. If your baby’s chest feels warm and dry, they’re dressed appropriately. Remember, cold hands and feet are normal.

Not sure if your baby is dressed appropriately for sleep? Give us a call, we’re here to help you keep them safe and cozy.

Two months in, and your baby is starting to show off some adorable new skills.

By 2 months old, babies are becoming more alert and social, and you may start to see big developmental changes from week to week.

Every baby grows at their own pace, but here are common milestones we look for around this age:

~ Smiling on purpose (social smiles in response to your voice or face)

~ Cooing and making early vowel sounds

~ Following objects with their eyes and turning toward familiar voices

~ Holding their head up briefly during tummy time

~ Moving arms and legs more smoothly compared to the newborn stage

~ Recognizing caregivers and calming with your voice, touch, or being held

We make it a priority to assess your baby’s milestones at every well visit. If your baby is not up to date, call today to schedule an appointment.

RSV can cause serious illness in infants, especially those under 6 months. This season, families have extra protection available with the RSV immunization.

Babies can receive the RSV monoclonal antibody (nirsevimab), which helps reduce the risk of severe disease. Pregnant mothers may also receive a maternal RSV vaccine, which protects the baby after birth.

These RSV antibodies work much like the natural antibodies a mother passes to her baby during pregnancy offering protection before your baby’s own immune system is mature enough to fight infections on its own.

If you have questions about eligibility or scheduling RSV protection for your newborn or for you if you are expecting, call our office and we’ll walk you through the guidelines.

Baby it is cold outside.

Cold winter air can make kids’ skin dry and itchy, and thicker creams usually work better than lotions because they seal in moisture longer.

Apply moisturizer right after baths, choose fragrance-free products, and keep soaps gentle on sensitive skin.

Our providers love products such as Cerave Healing Ointment, Eucerin Cream, and Aquaphor for dry skin.

If you notice cracking, worsening eczema, or rashes that don’t improve within a few days, give us a call. We’re happy to help with next steps.

When the weather keeps your family inside, it’s the perfect time to build connections in simple ways.

Try reading together under a warm blanket, cooking or baking a new recipe, creating an indoor scavenger hunt, snuggling up on the couch with a warm cup of hot chocolate or enjoying a favorite board game.

These small moments feel cozy but also build skills like communication, problem-solving, and patience.

What’s your favorite cold-weather family activity?

January is National Bath Safety Month — the perfect time to make sure your home’s water heater is set to a safe temperature. Hot tap water can cause burns in seconds, especially for young children.

✔ What temperature should it be?
Set your water heater to 120°F (49°C) to help prevent scalds.

How to check your water heater setting:
• Look at your water heater’s temperature dial — many have a clear temperature marking or a “hot / warm” range.
• To double-check, run hot water from a faucet for one minute and use a kitchen thermometer to test the water temperature.

How to adjust it:
• Turn the temperature dial down to 120°F (or the “warm” setting if temperatures aren’t labeled).
• Give the heater a few hours to reset, then recheck the tap temperature.
• If your heater is older or unmarked, or you’re unsure how to adjust it safely, contact your maintenance team, landlord, or a licensed professional.

A quick check can make bath time much safer for little ones.

Today we recognize Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whose leadership in the Civil Rights Movement helped end legal segregation and advance equal rights for all Americans.

His work reminds us of the importance of fairness, respect, and equitable access to care for every child and family we serve.

Wishing everyone a meaningful MLK Day.

If your teen’s thumb scrolls faster than your morning coffee pours, it might be time for a social media reset.

While smartphones and social apps are part of modern life, too much time online can interfere with sleep, schoolwork, friendships, and mental health. Experts recommend creating clear limits for screen time, such as turning off devices during homework, setting “no phone” windows before bed, and designating phone-free zones like the dinner table or bedroom.

For younger children, the AAP suggests limiting non-school screen use, but for teens, it’s about establishing balanced digital habits and ensuring screens don’t replace sleep, activity, and face-to-face time.

Not sure if your teens' social media or screen habits are appropriate? Call our office today to schedule an appointment to speak to one of our providers.

Flu season is here.

Kids often show symptoms like fever, body aches, cough, sore throat, and sometimes vomiting or diarrhea. Most cases can be managed at home with rest and fluids, but call our office if your child is working hard to breathe, isn’t drinking well, or isn’t improving after a few days.

Fun fact: kids are actually more likely than adults to spread the flu because they shed the virus longer.

Flu vaccines are still available and still one of the simplest ways to protect your family. Call today if your child still needs theirs.
