Many grade-school children experience “growing pains,” usually mild aches in the legs, often at night, that come and go and don’t interfere with daily activities.

These pains are common, harmless, and often relieved with gentle massage, stretching, or a warm bath.

However, some types of pain should be evaluated by a healthcare provider. Warning signs include persistent or worsening pain, swelling or redness in a joint, pain that causes limping, fever, unexplained bruising, or pain that wakes your child at night regularly. These could indicate conditions like juvenile arthritis, infections, or, rarely, more serious issues such as malignancy.

Paying attention to patterns and associated symptoms can help you know when to seek medical advice.

Not sure if it is growing pains or something more serious? Call today to schedule an appointment.

Packing for the hospital doesn’t need to be overwhelming. A few thoughtful items can make a big difference during labor, delivery, and recovery.

Here are five must-haves many parents find helpful:

1) Comfortable clothes for mom (nursing-friendly or loose-fitting)

2) Toiletries you actually like such as face wash, lip balm, hair ties, or dad’s favorite toilet paper

3) Phone chargers (long cord!) for staying connected and capturing moments

4) Comfort items like a favorite pillow or blanket for mom or dad

5) Snacks and drinks for partners during long hours

Every birth is different, so focus on comfort and flexibility rather than overpacking.

What was the one item you were so glad you packed or wish you had? Share in the comments to help other parents prepare.

Newborns are born with low levels of vitamin K, which is needed for normal blood clotting.

The vitamin K shot helps prevent rare but serious bleeding that can occur in the brain or other organs during the first weeks and months of life.

This protection is especially important because babies don’t get enough vitamin K from breast milk alone at birth. The injection has been used safely for decades and is strongly recommended by pediatric experts.

Questions about vitamin K?

Schedule a meet and greet with one of our pediatric trained providers at Fairhope Pediatrics before you deliver. We are happy to answer all of your questions.

Around six months, babies are becoming more active, curious, and expressive. You may notice new movements and sounds emerging as your baby continues to grow and explore.

Every baby develops at their own pace, but here are common milestones many parents see around this age:

What many 6-month-olds are doing:
- Rolling both directions (tummy to back and back to tummy)
- Reaching for and grasping objects, often bringing them to their mouth
- Sitting with support or briefly sitting independently
- Babbling with sounds like “ba,” “da,” or “ma”
- Responding to their name and enjoying social interaction
- Showing curiosity about people and surroundings

Remember, milestone timelines can vary, and development is not a race.

Your baby’s six-month visit is a great time to talk through milestones and any questions you have so bring your observations, and we’ll review them together. Need to schedule a wellness visit? Call our office today to schedule.

A preventive visit (well visit) focuses on routine care such as growth and development, vaccines, screenings, and age-appropriate guidance.

A problem-focused visit addresses specific concerns like ongoing symptoms, new illnesses, behavior concerns, medication adjustments, or chronic condition management.

If new or significant medical issues are discussed and evaluated during a preventive visit, both services may be billed. This is because the time, medical decision-making, and documentation required for addressing a problem go beyond routine preventive care.

Understanding the difference helps avoid surprises and ensures concerns are fully addressed.

Ask about visit types and billing ahead of time so you know what to expect. Our billing team has an abundance of knowledge to answer all of your questions. Do not hesitate to reach out.

Questions about your toddler’s nap schedule?

Many toddlers continue to need naps, but nap patterns can change quickly during this stage. Most children 1–3 years old still benefit from one nap per day, usually lasting 1–3 hours. As toddlers grow, naps may shorten or become inconsistent.

Signs a child may be getting ready to drop a nap include taking a long time to fall asleep at bedtime, fighting naps regularly, or very late afternoon naps interfering with nighttime sleep. Even when naps shorten or disappear, quiet rest time such as reading, puzzles, or calm play still helps toddlers reset and prevents over-tiredness.

If you have questions about your toddler’s nap schedule, reach out today to talk with one of our providers.

Teens, listen up!

It’s no secret that scrolling through social media can make anyone compare themselves to others. For teen girls, this constant comparison is linked to rising rates of anxiety and depression, with studies showing a significant increase over the past decade.

Remember: most social media highlights filtered, edited, or staged moments are not real life. Your worth isn’t measured by likes, followers, or the way someone else looks. Focus on things that make you feel strong, confident, and happy, whether that’s spending time with friends, being creative, or practicing self-care.

Tip: Take breaks from scrolling, unfollow accounts that make you feel bad, and follow people or pages that inspire you instead.

Our providers are here to help if you are feeling anxious, depressed, or overwhelmed. You can call (or have your parent call) to schedule an appointment with one of our providers today.

Vitamin D is essential for healthy bone growth and development.

Most breastfed babies need 400 IU of vitamin D per day, since breast milk alone doesn’t provide enough. This is usually given as daily vitamin D drops directly to the baby.

Another option some families choose is maternal supplementation when a breastfeeding parent takes a higher daily dose of vitamin D (often around 6,400 IU/day), enough vitamin D can pass through breast milk to meet the baby’s needs. This approach should only be done with guidance from your provider to ensure safety and proper dosing.

Because dosing matters, families should not start vitamin D supplements, either for baby or parent, without clear instructions from their care team.

Questions about vitamin D drops or maternal supplementation? Ask us at your newborn visit or or call one of our phone nurses.

A well check is meant to focus on preventive care like growth, development, routine screenings, and age-based guidance.

Sometimes a child also has a new concern that needs a separate evaluation during that same appointment. Examples might include an ear infection, a rash that needs a diagnosis and treatment plan, wheezing, a prolonged cough, abdominal pain, or a mental health concern that requires additional history and decision-making.

When a significant new problem is evaluated and managed at the well visit, it may be billed as both:

1) the preventive visit (the well check), and

2) an additional problem-focused visit (often listed as a sick visit)

This is not about charging twice for the same care. It reflects that two different types of services were provided in one appointment.

If you have questions about a bill from Fairhope Pediatrics, call our billing team. We are happy to walk through the charges, how your insurance processed the visit, and what applies to your copay or deductible.

Constipation is common during potty training and can make the process frustrating for both you and your child.

Skipping potty sessions, holding in stool, or being nervous about using the potty can all contribute. To help, offer plenty of water and fiber-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and encourage regular bathroom breaks especially after meals when the body naturally wants to go.

Creating a calm, positive potty routine, using a footstool for support, and offering praise or small rewards can make sitting on the potty more appealing.

Avoid pressure or punishment, as that can make constipation worse. With patience, consistency, and gentle encouragement, most children learn to go comfortably in the potty.

What potty training techniques worked for your family? We would love to hear from you. Share below.

Is your toddler a picky eater?

Picky eating is very common in toddlers and often part of normal development. Many children need multiple exposures to a new food before they’re willing to try it.

Eating together as a family, offering the same meal for everyone (with at least one “safe” food), and letting your child decide whether and how much to eat can help build healthier habits over time.

Try to avoid pressure, bargaining, or forcing bites as these strategies often increase resistance rather than reduce it.

If you’re worried about your toddler’s growth, nutrition, or food variety, schedule a visit so we can review patterns and offer tips and tricks to help.
