"WHY do I think that?"

Intrusive thoughts can feel confusing, disturbing, and deeply personal. Many people who experience them worry, “Why am I thinking this?” or “What does this say about me?”

In a new blog, ADAA Member Expert Stephan Siwiec, PhD, explains why intrusive thoughts happen, why they do not define who you are, and how understanding them can reduce fear and shame.

Intrusive thoughts are common — especially in anxiety and OCD — and trying to suppress them often makes them stronger. Learning how to respond differently can be a powerful step toward relief.

If you’ve ever felt unsettled by your own thoughts, this blog offers clarity, compassion, and evidence-based insight.

Webinar Announcement – Sponsored by Collaboration Practices
Working with Parents Caring for a Multi Diagnostic ED Teen/Young Adult that Hasn't Been Helped by Past Treatments

🗓 April 13, 2026 | ⏰ 12:00–1:30 pm EST

🎙 Featuring Lucene Wisniewski, PhD, Founder of the Center for Evidence Based Treatment (CEBT)

Teens and young adults with multi diagnostic eating disorder presentations—especially those who have not benefited from traditional treatment—often leave parents feeling exhausted, terrified, and unsure where to turn next. Many caregivers report doing “everything right” (multiple levels of care, limits, engagement) and still watching their child remain stuck or deteriorate.

Sponsored by Collaboration Practices, this 90 minute webinar will introduce MED DBT, an adaptation of Dialectical Behavior Therapy for complex eating disorder presentations. Dr. Wisniewski will focus on how to engage and equip parents as integral members of the treatment team, including how to hold loving, effective limits with high risk teens and young adults.

By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:
• Identify patients for whom MED DBT may be appropriate
• Articulate how MED DBT differs from standard DBT and standard ED treatment
• Identify strategies to instill hope in parents whose adolescents/young adults have not responded to past ED treatments

In honor of Eating Disorders Awareness Week, we want to share our founder Lucene Wisniewski PH.D., FAED’s appearance on the podcast “Our Womanity” hosted by Dr. Rachel Pope. She and Dr. Wisniewski shine a light on the “silent epidemic” of disordered eating in perimenopause and menopause. Together they unpack how hormone changes, body image pressures, and weight-focused culture collide in midlife.
They explore:
• Why the menopause transition is a biological “window of risk” for both new and returning eating disorders
• The difference between effective, flexible eating and rigid “food rules”
• Red flags like body checking, food moralization, and preoccupation with tracking apps
• How restriction often fuels binge eating
• ARFID in adults and how it differs from anorexia
• How to talk to a friend or family member you’re worried about—without shame or blame

If you’re navigating midlife, GLP-1 medications, or a changing relationship with food, this episode offers compassionate, evidence-based guidance and hope.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is the gold standard, evidence based treatment for OCD.

ERP works by helping people gradually face feared thoughts, images, urges, or situations while learning to resist compulsions. Over time, this process helps retrain the brain, reduce anxiety, and weaken OCD’s grip.

ERP is not about forcing fear or “just facing it.” It is structured, collaborative, and done at a pace that is thoughtful and intentional. With the right support, ERP helps people build tolerance for uncertainty and reclaim their lives from OCD.
