This week we recognize Lina D. Semmons (Odou), a trailblazer who helped open the doors of education for women in funeral service.
An embalmer and educator in the early 1900s, Semmons founded one of the first embalming schools specifically for women. At a time when women had limited access to professional training in mortuary science, she created opportunities for women to gain the education and skills needed to enter the field.
Her work helped transform funeral service by making education more accessible and encouraging women to pursue careers in the profession.
By creating pathways for education, Lina D. Semmons turned access into opportunity for women in funeral service.
