How did the turkey, albeit a giant, delicious bird, become the icon it is during Thanksgiving time? 🤔 Historians agree that the first feast included wild fowl, venison, corn, and nuts, but not pies or mashed potatoes, and seafood, including lobsters and clams, was plentiful and common.
When a colonist named Bradford documented some of the animals he saw, he did mention that wild turkeys were afoot, but not specifically if the bird was served during the meal. It wasn't a particularly common food at the time, but the idea of early colonists hunting wild turkeys caught the nation’s imagination, and the imagery took off.
