“Postpartum Webster chiropractic care and infant chiropractic care involves assessing the nervous system of this dyad as they weave together a new chapter in their lives. The process is an exquisite dance between deep vulnerability and profound inner power. As Jeanne Ohm said, ‘Step back and let’s be awestruck by what the body knows to do, for us and in us, all the time.’” - Dr. Steph Libs

Dive into the history and legacy of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) and the future of the Webster Technique in our Fall 2024 issue. Dr. Justin Ohm features the ICPA’s incredible team of Webster instructors: Dr. Pamela Stone, Dr. Steph Libs, Dr. Jen Santos and Dr. Glenda Velazquez in “The Origin and Future of The ICPA and the Webster Technique.”

💕💕 BABY FACT 💕💕
During a vaginal birth, pressure on a baby's head may cause it to "mold" into a cone or oblong shape making it easier to fit through the birth canal.

This abnormal head shape is a normal part of the childbirth process called "molding" and usually disappears just a few days after birth for most babies.

A newborn's skull bones are soft and flexible which allow for this process. Between the bones there are large gaps called "cranial sutures", and even larger openings (one in the front of the baby's head and one in the back) called "fontanels".

These are the soft spots that you can feel when you touch your baby's head.

The large spaces between the bones will not only allow the head to change shape for birth, but also accommodate the baby's rapidly growing brain which will double in size by the time they hit their first birthday!

Most will fully close by the age of 2, when brain growth reaches about 80% of its full size.

Most babies born to first time moms or labors with a longer pushing stage, will have some degree of head molding after delivery. While babies born by Cesarean section or a quick vaginal birth, more often have rounder heads.

Big fat MYTH! You are not stuck laboring or pushing on your back if you have an epidural. ..
Pushing on your back is one of the most ineffective ways to push, it does not optimize body mechanics or gravity. There are loads of pushing position options but epidural moms may feel intimidated to try them or have a birth team unwilling to "allow" a mother with an epidural to move about with support, This is where a doula can play a key role, they can help you change positions in labor and may even be able to educate the birth team on how best to support your birthing position of choice. ..
We have a whole blog on labor positions, all of which include epidural modifications. Simply Google "The VBAC link Labor & Birthing Positions" or follow the live link in our stories today to read the whole blog. What position did you deliver your baby in? Share in the comments below!..

"Umbilical cords have two arteries and a vein that run the length of it. Those three vessels are surrounded by a special substance called Wharton’s Jelly. This jelly is thick and gelatinous when functional – this is to prevent the baby from accidentally causing it to kink and stop functioning (even true knots in the cord rarely cause problems because the Wharton’s Jelly prevents it from being able to tighten down and occlude blood flow to baby!)

When baby is born, this cord continues to function, providing the baby with not only blood and oxygen – but providing baby TIME! Time to transition to air breathing, experiencing the changes that babies go through at birth. As long as that cord is pulsing, it’s working for the baby the exact same way it did before the baby came out.

Once baby’s breathing and the cord is no longer needed, it goes through its own transformation. The Wharton’s Jelly in the cord begins to liquefy…tightening down on those vessels…clamping them off naturally. The cord slowly becomes thin, white, limp – dramatic changes from the thick purple pulsing entity it was when the baby was born!

Not clamping or cutting the cord until this transformation has occurred provides the baby with the benefit of extra blood, oxygen, gentleness and time!

Here you can see the magical changes of the cord! These pictures are ALL of the same umbilical cord…progressively taken over time.

THE FOLLOWING PICTURES WERE TAKEN OVER A PERIOD OF ABOUT 15 MINUTES – BABY WAS ATTACHED THE ENTIRE TIME.

1. Brand new! Right after birth the cord is thick, pulsing. We could actually SEE it thumping with the baby’s heartbeat.

2. There’s already a difference!! Look at how much thinner it is – less purple, less ‘tight’…

3. Less purple…thinner….

4. same piece of cord, same angle….now MUCH whiter, much thinner. But still not done with the transformation! You might think so though, huh! No…just wait.

5. NOW we are pretty much finished with the transformation. Compare this to the top picture of the same piece of cord….

6. Completely done, Wharton’s Jelly has liquified, the cord is not pulsing…it is thin, white, and very limp. Amazing!"

Please don’t let me forget.

Please don’t let me forget the sight of a little boy’s bed.

Please don’t let me forget the imprint of his soft head on the pillow as he gazes up at me with such innocence and trust.

Please don’t let me forget the sound of his sweet voice as he asks to be tucked in.

Please don’t let me forget the feel of his cheek against mine when I lean in and whisper, “I love you.”

Please don’t let me forget the way he replies, “I love you, too, Mommy,” and my heart contracts in my chest and tears well in my eyes.

Please don’t let me ever forget the sight of a little boy’s bed.

Because someday I won’t be his whole world anymore.

And someday he won’t ask me to tuck him in.

Someday I hope he will still lean into my embrace, and I hope I am lucky enough to hear,

“I love you, Mom.”

But for now,

I’m engraving it on my heart.

I’m etching it into my soul.

The sight of my little boy’s bed.

Please, don’t let me forget.
