February is Heart Month. When most people think about serious cardiovascular emergencies, they usually think of heart attacks and strokes. But there is another condition that belongs in the same conversation: pulmonary embolism (PE).

Pulmonary embolism is a dangerous condition that requires immediate treatment. A new team approach is making it easier for patients to receive life-saving care.

With snow and extremely cold temperatures in the forecast, read our tips from Dr. Pant on how to stay safe while shoveling this weekend. ❄️

Snow shoveling is a common trigger for heart emergencies. Heavy lifting motions above the chest plus the cold air can result in a sharp rise of heart rate and blood pressure, even in people who are otherwise healthy.

🚫 Who Should NOT Shovel:
• Those who have known heart disease (heart attack, stents, bypass, heart failure) or prior stroke.
• If you experience chest pain with exertion, unexplained shortness of breath, or worsening symptoms.
• If you have multiple risk factors: high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking history etc.
Ask for help from family, neighbors, or a service!

🚨 STOP & Call 911 if you feel chest pain that is spreading to the arm, jaw, back or shoulder, if you experience dizziness, faintness, unusual fatigue, or if you feel an irregular or racing heartbeat.
If you’re healthy and able, check on neighbors — especially older adults or those unable to shovel — and offer help clearing steps and walkways.

We hope everyone stays safe and warm this weekend!

We are excited to share advanced new technology at Saint Anne’s Hospital! The GLOBUS Excelsius 3D imaging platform gives our surgeons instant, ultra-detailed 2D and 3D views during surgery, allowing for exceptional precision when operating near the spine. When combined with our robotic surgical systems, this means procedures can be performed with greater accuracy and potentially smaller incisions. For patients, that can translate into safer surgeries, less disruption to surrounding tissue, and a smoother, faster recovery.
