Isn’t this an interesting idea!!!
Every kitchen herb you buy at the grocery store can grow in a dollar laundry basket on your porch — the built-in slots give roots the airflow and drainage herbs actually need.
- Basil — full sun, warm soil, and fast drainage make baskets ideal since basil rots the moment roots sit in water.
- Mint — the basket walls contain spreading runners that would hijack an entire garden bed in one season.
- Cilantro — bolts fast in heat so move the basket into afternoon shade when temps climb above 80°F.
- Rosemary — needs sharp drainage more than any other herb, the slotted basket walls mimic the rocky Mediterranean soil it evolved in.
- Parsley — deep taproot fits a standard basket depth and one plant produces enough to cut weekly for 6+ months.
- Thyme — trailing stems spill through the basket slots and the constant airflow prevents the crown rot that kills it in dense garden soil.
- Chives — clumps multiply fast in the contained space and you can divide them into new baskets every spring for free.
- Dill — tall and floppy in garden beds but a basket lets you tuck it against a wall or fence for natural support.
- Oregano — spreads aggressively in the ground but stays perfectly behaved inside a basket, harvest all summer and it comes back next year.
