Today we all were at the dining room table after breakfast and listened to Dan Appleton, a resident, share his memories of being on board the Pennsylvania in drydock in Pearl Harbor when it was attacked and hit twice. A tear came to his face when he talked of how he remembers that 15 of his fellow classmates from the academy were on board the Arizona, where they still are entombed today.

Today (December 7, 2011) the County of Los Angeles, as it does every year, buried (1,639) persons in a mass grave. About 50% of the bodies were unclaimed during the last 3 years by family members and about 50% of the bodies did not have family members who could afford the cost of an individual burial. It is truly regrettable that today in America this condition can exist.

Our vegetable garden is very productive this year. We are continually having fresh tomatoes and lettuce for salads, along with beets, carrots, beans, onions, okra, radishes, zuccihini, potatoes, cucumbers, watermelons, green and red bell peppers, etc. We then always add fresh herbs from our herb garden.

Our Brown Turkey fig tree is producing a bumper crop this year. So, we processed several jars of Brown Turkey Fig jam for our residents.

Yesterday, July 4th, the caregivers, residents and some family members ate barbecued chicken and enjoyed as we all sat in our backyard a fantastic fireworks show as presented by the Village of Fallbrook at the Grand Tradition estate located immediately south of us.

Golden Gardens was represented at the Fallbrook Music Society's 25th "Pops on the Green," concert with the San Diego Symphony and soloist Jodi Benson - the voice of Ariel in the movie "The Little Mermaid." It was at the Grand Tradition Estate, with its heart shaped lake, waterfalls, graceful swans and impeccable landscaping. We enjoyed a gourmet picnic dinner, while listening to some absolutely great music, in a fabulous setting and incredibly, only 1/2 mile away from Golden Gardens.

We recently hired another outstanding caregiver - Lo**ta - who shows a great deal of compassion toward and caring for all of our residents. We and our residents are very pleased to have Lo**ta with us.

Also, cereal, oatmeal, etc. was available to anyone who desired it. Everything is served with proportions based on the diet of each resident.

We have been asked to describe a typical meal we serve. Although we try to customize the meals we serve in accordance with the tastes and needs of each resident, we can describe a typical meal, such as breakfast this morning which included: home made Belgium waffles with maple syrup, sausage patty, the juice of oranges picked from our trees about 20 minutes prior to breakfast, fresh fruit (bananas, et al) and coffee.
