At Ekoe we have so many wonderful women who give to support us. Today we wanted to highlight Ann with Cant Beet Plants who we already know shows us how to cook so many yummy foods. However, we also wanted to share more about Ann and what inspires her.

From Ann: "I have been inspired by so many women in my life from my mother who got her masters degree while pregnant with her third child and working full time to sisters and sisters-in-law who have forged their own sometimes very difficult paths in the face of adversity and emerged stronger for making the hard decisions and daring to take chances. I am also continually inspired by my circle of women friends who have juggled life and work carving out new and exciting paths for themselves with joy and compassion. My life would be so much less without all these unique, smart and fearless women who I love."

Thank you so much Ann for being part of the Ekoe community. We are so lucky!

Today is National Unplugging Day.

Unplugging gives way to reconnection -- somatically, relationally, and collectively. When we mindfully pause and take space; to ground, move, nourish ourselves, or rest, change and healing can occur. We're absolutely wired to live and heal in connection. When we're plugged in 24/7 to screens and social media, our energy depletes, and we ultimately lose connection.

Today, at Ekoe, we are challenging ourselves to unplug for at least one hour from all technology and ask for you to join us.

As Black History Month comes to a close, we remember two outstanding individuals who paved the way in the field of psychology.

Inez Beverly Prosser, PhD, was the first African American woman to receive her doctoral degree in psychology.

During her career Prosser encouraged many black students to pursue higher education and her work was influential in the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision that later took place in 1954.
_____

Francis Sumner, PhD, is referred to as the “Father of Black Psychology” because he was the first African American to receive a PhD degree in psychology.

He was interested in understanding racial bias and supporting educational justice. Sumner is also credited as one of the founders of the psychology department at Howard University, which he chaired from 1928 until his death in 1954.

Today is National Make a Friend Day and while it might be a made-up day on the calendar, it's still important to honor the friendships and the important role they play in our lives.

Did you know that we are wired to survive by attachment as babies all the way through adulthood? The need for attachment is in our DNA.

Also, connection to others is central in addressing all mental health issues. Group support promotes behavior change and reduces anxiety. EKOE Health is a big proponent of group support and we often hold workshops and sessions.

The connection with others and with ourselves go hand in hand. The more connected we are to others and maintain secure friendships, the more connected we are to ourselves and self care.

So go ahead, celebrate those friendships!

Today we Go Red for Women! February is American Heart Month and it's especially important that awareness is raised for the those most at risk for heart disease; it's the #1 killer of women (causing 1 in 3 deaths per year) and disproportionately affects African American women. Check out the American Heart Association for more information and to understand your risk.
