Hearing Loss:
A recent study found that by age 18, approximately 13% of adolescents exhibit signs of hearing loss, with 6% having permanent sensorineural hearing loss. The research identified a strong association between this hearing loss and exposure to recreational noise, such as listening to music at high volumes. These findings highlight the importance of monitoring and limiting volume levels to help prevent noise-induced hearing damage in teens. At NVPA, we routinely perform a hearing screening as part of our annual visits.

Myocarditis

Children More Likely To Develop Rare Heart Complications Following COVID-19 Infection Than After Covid Vaccination.

A new study that was published in the Lancet showed that the COVID vaccine is safer for children’s heart health than if they become infected with the coronavirus. Children who get COVID infection have an increased risk of rare heart complications including blood clots, heart inflammation and low platelet counts that lasts up to a year after their infection (about 2.2/100,000 children). By comparison, COVID vaccination caused only a short-term higher risk in heart inflammation that lasted about a month and at a much lower risk (0.9/100,000 children).

RSV infection

Recent data show a surge in highly contagious RSV (Respiratory Syncytial virus) cases in the US, sending many babies and toddlers to the ER with severe bronchiolitis and pneumonia. The CDC now recommends that pregnant women receive the RSV vaccine at 32–36 weeks' gestation to provide infants with maternal antibodies that protect through their first RSV season. If the mother is not vaccinated, infants should receive a long-acting RSV antibody (nirsevimab or clesrovimab) within their first week of life, ideally during the birth hospitalization. These measures are highly effective at preventing severe RSV and hospitalization in infants

RSV Bronchiolitis

Thousands of infants and young children are hospitalized with RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) infection each year. Babies can now be protected by either a maternal vaccine (Abrysvo) given during pregnancy at least two weeks before delivery or by getting a monoclonal antibody (Beyfortus/Nirsemab) given in the first 8 months of life during the RSV season. This has reduced the risks of hospitalization due to RSV infection by more than 80%.

Sun Protection

Outdoor activities are extremely important for all children. Children however, are at higher risk from sun exposure due to their thinner skin, regardless of their skin type. Effective sun protection, including the use of sunscreens is crucial in preventing long term skin damage. Some helpful recommendations include:

1. Avoiding midday sun exposure (10 am to 4 pm) when UV rays are strongest. Schedule outdoor activities for early morning or late afternoon when possible
2. Use protective clothing such as hats with full brims and long-sleeved shirts and pants
3. Apply sunscreens (SPF: 30-50), 30 minutes before sun exposure, and reapply every 2-3 hours. The best sunscreens are broad spectrum offering both UVA and UVB protection and contain physical UV filters such as titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. Ensure the sunscreen is water resistant for up to 80 minutes if the child will be swimming.
4. Seek Shade whenever possible.

It is important to remember that infants under six months of age should avoid direct sun exposure and use protective clothing and shade instead of sunscreens.

Whooping cough (pertussis):

We have seen a sharp spike in whooping cough cases across the nation, with the tragic loss of two infants recently. This is in addition to the death of two children from measles and over 150 children from the flu illness this season alone. These heart breaking events underscore the critical importance of timely vaccinations according to the recommended schedule. Vaccinations remain the most effective measure to prevent these devastating diseases and protect the health and the well being of our children and communities.
