There’s someone at your child’s hospital whose entire job is making scary medical moments less scary. And the weird part is that you may not have ever heard of them.
They're called Child Life Specialists. Game-changing rockstars, if you ask us (or ask patients, or the research!)
They have specialized degrees in child development. They’re nationally credentialed. They’re trained in the science of how a kid’s brain processes fear, pain, and stress during medical experiences.
A child who’s terrified during a procedure doesn’t just have a bad day. They carry that experience into the next appointment, and the one after that, and sometimes all the way into adulthood. Child Life Specialists are the ones who stop that pattern before it starts.
They prepare kids in language their brain can process. They build coping plans with the child, not just for them. They help a kid go from “I can’t do this” to “here’s my plan.” The outcomes back it up: hospitals with integrated Child Life programs see reduced sedation, shorter stays, and faster recovery.
The American Academy of Pediatrics calls them essential (heck yeah they are!). Most families don’t know they exist. We’re working on that.
