Sheet Metal Occupational Health Institute Trust (SMOHIT)

Sheet Metal Occupational Health Institute Trust (SMOHIT) Our mission is to develop and promote health and safety resources for the sheet metal industry, thereby creating a safer, injury-free workforce.

Jointly sponsored by SMART, the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation workers, and the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors’ National Association (SMACNA), the Sheet Metal Occupational Health Institute Trust (SMOHIT) Inc. was founded in 1986 to address the impact of decades-long asbestos exposure on those working in the sheet metal industry. To date, tens of thousands of union sheet metal workers have been screened as part of its ongoing Job Hazards Screening program (formerly Asbestos Screening). SMOHIT has since expanded its mission to operate on four separate but related tracks: monitor and document the health of union sheet metal workers related to workplace exposures and hazards; provide safety information and training to promote best practices on and off the job; advocate for the physical, mental and emotional health and safety of SMART and SMACNA members with government and through likeminded allied organizations; and provide diet, exercise and other lifestyle information to address the health and wellness of union members and contractors. We offer the highest quality of safety training available, making the workforce more productive and economical. The well-being of sheet metal workers remains, as always, our primary focus.

It’s almost Halloween! Safety reality check: cars are a bigger hazard to your kids than tainted candy ever was. While the threat of strangers hiding razors in Snickers bars has been widely debunked, each Halloween sees a very real spike in pedestrian injuries and drunk driving accidents. Keep little ones well-lit and on the sidewalk, and encourage inexperienced drivers or tipsy party guests to give up their keys.

Halloween parties can be rough on people in recovery. If you’ve made progress but are worried that temptation may derail your sobriety, remember these tips:
1. Prioritize where you go and who you spend time with — what’s worthwhile?
2. Have your “elevator pitch” ready — state (without shame) that you are staying sober.
3. Bring your own beverages so you have what you want.
4. Remember, you can have fun while also safeguarding your overall well-being!

So, how are you? Symptoms of seasonal affective disorder (SAD) can start to set in during the autumn months. Changing light levels or vitamin D deficiency can worsen anxiety, as can the anticipation of winter. If healthy habits and self-care aren’t making a difference, it might be time to seek support from a mental health professional. Call the 988 Lifeline if you are in crisis, or the Helpline at 877-884-6227 if you just need a helpful ear and resources to figure out your next step.

October is Eye Injury Prevention Month. (Hopefully you are wearing proper eye protection every month!) Now is a good time to bring up the importance of appropriate eye protection on the jobsite and do a fit check to make sure you have proper coverage, comfort and adequate peripheral vision.
