Recently, I saw the name of a friend I loved and lost. My heart ached at the thought of her, as it has many times over the years.

I saw, as though gazing down a long tunnel stretching into the past, all the different forms my grief had taken—anger, indifference, judgment, bitterness, longing, scheming, dismissiveness. When I saw these things for what they were, they fell away.

I haven’t escaped my grief—none of us do. The masks I’ve used to hide it from myself never insulated me from it. They’ve only allowed it to fester, unacknowledged.

May we all see our grief through its many masks, and feel it as fully as possible—with nothing added.
