Cape CBI Therapist, Jay Masiello shares some advice on men's mental health....

"Recently, I asked a client, 'Growing up, when did you talk about how you felt?” His response. “I didn’t.'

It’s not worth saying “Men don’t know how to talk about feelings” when men are seldom given the opportunity to do so. Allow yourself to train a new muscle, your brain. See its growth in all aspects of your life.

Sometimes you have to try out a few gyms before committing to one. Finding the right therapist can be a similar endeavor. Some important questions to ask yourself when meeting with a therapist: Is this person interested in hearing me speak? Are they asking me interesting or stimulating questions? Are they asking me hard questions?

Therapy isn’t about being broken; it's about getting better. Mental health impacts your relationships, work, confidence, performance, and overall well-being. Whether you're experiencing difficult times or need someone to bounce thoughts/ideas off, working with a professionally trained therapist can facilitate emotional exploration and growth."

Cape CBI is proud to share about our intern Janell Hoffman’s recent attendance at CrisisCon. We are incredibly proud of the expertise she brings to the clinic.

“For almost two years, I have worked in su***de prevention leadership at one of the five 988 Crisis & Lifeline Centers in Massachusetts through The Samaritans of Cape Cod & The Islands. This informs and supports my work at Cape CBI because of the extensive access to training, research, and experts in the field of suicidology, prevention, and response. Clinically, I am able to support clients who are experiencing suicidal ideation and work across risk levels to reduce harm with a collaborative and confident approach to their care.

In September, I was able to attend CrisisCon - a National conference bringing together all stakeholders in crisis mental health across the country in Indianapolis, Indiana. The continued learning and best practices around crisis mental health make me a stronger therapist. But a highlight of this trip was meeting the dogs from HOPE, a non-profit organization that trains its therapy dogs to provide emotional support to those experiencing crisis or disaster. I was lucky to spend some time with Sherman!”
