An HIA Health Family Member. As a sister organization to Hospice of the Red River Valley, our medical providers are experts in geriatric and palliative medicine. Our work is guided by our desire to provide the right care, in the right place, at the right time. Our care comes to you. We are privileged to provide House Calls in many settings, including people’s own homes, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, senior living communities and many other places people consider “home.”

Compassionate care has the ability to transform what could be a clinical process into a deeply human experience. It supports the whole person—their comfort, dignity, choices, and story.

At HIA House Calls, we believe compassionate care is not a bonus—it’s the foundation. It’s what our parent brand HIA Health and our brands HIA Hospice, HIA Heirlooms, and HIA House Calls provide every day in homes, facilities, and at Heather’s House.

It’s not just about how we treat. It’s about how we show up.

And that’s the power of Hearts In Action.

Living with a chronic illness doesn’t mean you have to stop moving forward.

Staying healthy and active looks different for everyone, but even small steps can make a big difference.

Here are a few tips from the HIA House Calls team to help support your health at home:
✔️ Listen to your body. Rest when needed. Move when able.
✔️ Start small. Gentle stretching, short walks, or light household activities count.
✔️ Keep a routine. Daily structure supports both your body and mind.
✔️ Stay hydrated and eat with purpose. Nutrition fuels healing.
✔️ Communicate with your care team. We’re here to help adjust your plan when life changes.

Compassionate care isn’t just a promise. It’s how our Nurse Practitioners show up every day, in every home.

During National Nurse Practitioner Week, we celebrate the HIA House Calls NPs who bring comfort, connection, and expert care directly to patients where they need it most.

They listen fully.
They notice the small things.
They treat the whole person, not just the symptoms.

This is what Hearts in Action looks like.

Care that meets you at your door and stays with you through every step.

To our incredible NPs: thank you for leading with skill, heart, and humanity.

Caring for someone with dementia can be challenging, but you don’t have to navigate it alone.

At HIA House Calls, we support caregivers with practical tools that bring calm, structure, and connection into daily life. Here are a few simple tips from our dementia care resource guide:

Stick to a routine. Predictable schedules help reduce confusion and anxiety.

Use short, clear sentences. Offer choices instead of open-ended questions.

Create a calm space. Limit background noise and reduce clutter when possible.

Meet them where they are. Correcting or arguing can increase distress. Gentle redirection often works better.

Take breaks. Your well-being matters too.

Dementia alters our communication, but not the need for connection, love, and dignity.

We’re honored to be recognized by Governor Kelly Armstrong and the State of North Dakota in a proclamation declaring November 2025 as Hospice & Palliative Care Month.

For more than 40 years, HIA Hospice has provided comfort, dignity, and compassionate care to patients and families across our region. This month — and every month — we celebrate the caregivers, volunteers, and supporters who make Hearts In Action possible. 💜

“It’s not about the end of life, it’s about the quality of life.”

This is something we hear often from the families we serve—and it speaks directly to what we believe at HIA Health.

Hospice and palliative care aren’t just about preparing for what’s next. They’re about honoring what’s happening now: time with loved ones, comfort at home, and the dignity of being seen and supported through every moment.

Quality of life isn’t a luxury—it’s essential. That’s what Hearts In Action means to us.

After more than 70 years of marriage, Joseph and Ann Bichler still share each day side by side—thanks to the compassionate care of HIA Hospice and HIA House Calls.

Joseph, a World War II Veteran, is supported by our hospice team. Ann continues with monthly visits through House Calls. Together, they receive the kind of care that honors both independence and dignity.

Their daughter Becky, a registered nurse with HIA Health, says, “Right now my dad probably wouldn’t be alive, and my mom probably wouldn’t be alive either, without hospice care or house calls.”

The Bichler family’s story is a reminder of what matters most—time, connection, and care that allows families to stay together, at home.
