As part of Women’s History Month, we honor Harriet Tubman — whose federal day of recognition is March 10.
After escaping slavery, Tubman returned more than 13 times to rescue over 70 family members and friends, earning the name “Moses” from those she guided to freedom. During the Civil War, she served the Union Army as a nurse, cook, scout, and spy, and became the first woman to lead a major armed military raid, liberating more than 700 enslaved people.
Later in life, she became a powerful advocate for women’s suffrage, working alongside leaders such as Susan B. Anthony.
Her legacy reminds us that the fight for women’s rights did not end with suffrage — it continues today. May we carry forward the strength, courage, and conviction she embodied.

On March 2, 1903, The Martha Washing Hotel opened in New York City. It was the first hotel in the U.S. that catered exclusively to professional, independent women. It provided a safe and respectful residence for women working within the city.

It is important, especially now, that we recognize the many contributions women have and continue to make to our communities.

Here at Canopy Medical Clinic, we would like to honor the women of our staff doing incredible work and making our community a better place. If you haven't visited us before, this month is a great time to come meet us!

The March issue of the newsletter is out, and there’s one development we want to spotlight that didn’t make it into the legislative corner: H.R. 7661, a newly introduced national book‑ban bill in the U.S. House of Representatives. The bill targets—like so many others in this wave of censorship—any books that include references to LGBTQ+ people or acknowledge their existence in society, with transgender individuals singled out most directly.

Efforts to strip LGBTQ+ representation from literature and media are not neutral policy choices; they are attempts to erase people from public life by erasing them from the stories we’re allowed to access. As Jon Rosenthal reminds us, “Those who ban books are never on the right side of history.”
