Prior to billing the DME MAC, ensure the beneficiary is entitled to Medicare Part B Fee for Service (FFS). Billing without appropriate FFS coverage can result in claim denials, rejections, or overpayments; all of which require additional work to resolve. Performing a quick eligibility check before billing helps reduce rework, supports clean claims, and promotes timely payment.
Use the Noridian Medicare Portal (NMP) to verify Part B entitlement and confirm the beneficiary is not enrolled in a Medicare Advantage or other secondary plan, or in an active Part A inpatient stay, skilled nursing facility (SNF), home health, or hospice episode.

When billing Medicare for manual wheelchairs, the KX modifier is used to indicate that all coverage criteria outlined in the applicable Local Coverage Determination (LCD) and Policy Article have been fully met. Only append the KX modifier when documentation confirms the beneficiary has a medically necessary mobility limitation, cannot use a cane or walker, will benefit from a manual wheelchair in the home, and can self-propel or has a caregiver available.

It is not appropriate to combine a hydrating dressing with an absorptive dressing such as hydrogel and alginate dressings on the same wound at the same time. The use of a hydrating dressing is to keep the wound moist. An absorptive dressing is used to dry the wound out. This information can be found in the Surgical Dressing Local Coverage Determination (LCD) L33831 under the Miscellaneous section.
