Tessa here! I want to tell you all about my little 10 month old client Carder! Iβve been seeing Carder since he was 28 days old! His mom felt that his feeding and oral skills were decreased, so she advocated for him and got a referral to OST. Her gut feeling was right.
Carder has made significant improvements with his feeding and swallowing since starting therapy! He can eat soft solids and puree foods without issues right now! He is still working on nasal breathing, but he has some respiratory issues being figured out. He will see a pulmonologist later this month.
Carder had RSV when he was just 1 month old. He was admitted to the hospital. Then at 3 months old, he was still struggling with adequate breathing and his primary wanted him to go to the hospital. While he was in the NICU for extra respiratory support because the RSV continued, a doctor recommended genetic testing for him to his parents. They followed through with the genetic testing and it was determined that Carder has CHARGE Syndrome. You can learn more about it here: https://www.chargesyndrome.org/overview/
Carder, as part of his syndrome, has significant to profound hearing loss in both ears. He finally got his hearing aids 18 days before this video. I want to remind you that this video was just last week and he is ONLY 10 months old. He is doing incredible! A huge shout out to his parents for pursuing the answers and taking him to all of the appointments. Many therapies and medical appointments are necessary for a lot of children with varying diagnoses. Parents are the true heroes for putting in so much time and effort. It truly is not an easy feat! Shout out to all these parents employers for allowing them to take the time away from work for all of these appointments too!
Carder is currently working on simple sign language, communication skills, learning all the words that he has never been able to hear until 3 weeks ago, and working on nasal breathing, reducing his high palate and drooling, and lip closure 3x per week. In the photo you can see he is using a Myomunchee BEBE to help work on his palatal width and shape, and jaw strength and he loves it. He also sees an OT and PT and has only been able to hold his head up independently since he was 8 months old. He is now sitting independently, crawling, rolling, and getting himself around independently!
Carder reminds me to enjoy the simple things, remain positive, and to never give up! β€οΈ I am truly lucky to be his speech-language pathologist and watch him achieve all of these wonderful milestones!
