For Joyia Tjaden, nursing isn’t just a job—it’s a calling.
“I absolutely love what I do, and it brings me great fulfillment to be there to help during the final moments of someone’s life,” says Joyia, a hospice RN at Ethos in Grand Forks.
What gives her work deeper meaning is the chance to build relationships with patients and their families. “Getting to know them gives my job a much greater purpose,” she shares.
Joyia recalled a quote that stayed with her: a nurse is often the first and last touch at the start and end of life. “We are the hands that bookend a lifetime,” she says. “To me, that is much more than being a nurse—it is a calling.”
To anyone considering a career in nursing, she offers this encouragement: “Take the first step and try it. And make sure to lean on those around you—the job we do isn’t light, but it is still rewarding.”
