The Mel Bornstein Clinic

The Mel Bornstein Clinic The Mel Bornstein Clinic offers high quality psychotherapy to children, adolescents, and adults in southeast Michigan.

With offices in Ann Arbor and Farmington Hills we have therapists who take a wide range of insurances, including Medicare and Medicaid. The Mel Bornstein Clinic is made possible through a generous gift from Mel and Audrey Bornstein and by subsequent donations from friends and members of the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute and Society. We have also received a grant from the American Psychoanalytic Association Foundation. We have raised sufficient funds to begin the necessary steps to establish the MBCPP as a full-functioning, free-standing Outpatient Psychiatric Clinic (OPC).
“For over forty years, the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute has provided reduced-fee psychoanalysis and psychotherapy in Farmington Hills and Ann Arbor” according to Aisha Abbasi, M.D. Chair of the steering committee overseeing the project. “While we have provided high-quality treatment to many people, we have never, until now, been able to collect reimbursement from insurance companies. Our primary mission is to broaden the base of those we might serve in the community by enabling people to use their insurances to help them underwrite the costs of therapy.”
The Mel Bornstein Clinic is scheduled to receive the accreditation of the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) mid-October, which will meet the requirements for reimbursement from most insurance companies, including eventually Medicare and Medicaid. For those without insurance, we will continue to work out a reduced-fee arrangement, as has been the practice when directly affiliated with Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute. The therapists will be supervised by members of the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute, assuring high quality oversight, guidance, and instruction in clinical work.
“Therapies offered at the MBCPP will be guided by the sound and ethical standards that are promoted by the long tradition of psychoanalytic education and practice”, said Dr. Abbasi. “We will provide thorough and intelligent assessment and evaluation, as well as opportunities for intensive psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. I believe this distinguishes us as unique in the Detroit metropolitan area”. The Mel Bornstein Clinic operates as a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation, a free-standing legal entity separate from MPI and MPF. All surplus revenues will support the educational and outreach activities of the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute, through the Michigan Psychoanalytic Foundation. About the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute & Society
The Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute provides training and educational programs in adult and child/adolescent psychoanalysis and psychotherapy. The Michigan Psychoanalytic Society is an association of professional psychoanalysts and other professionals interested in psychoanalysis. The Society's mission is to represent the clinical, professional, and research interests of psychoanalysis and its members. The Psychoanalytic Clinical Perspectives Group (PCPG) is an outreach organization whose aim is to enhance undergraduate and graduate students' opportunities to understand psychoanalytic ideas and clinical work while they're still in school. The Institute and Society are supported financially by the Michigan Psychoanalytic Foundation, which also supports outreach and public information as part of its mission. The Mel Borstein Clinic for Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy stands as a separate legal entity from MPF, MPI and MPS, a non-profit supporting organization of the Michigan Psychoanalytic Foundation.

Why mental health matters

“For me, mental health isn’t just important, it’s the anchor in the storm of a cancer diagnosis. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014, and in 2019, I learned it had metastasized. That journey taught me a crucial lesson: you cannot separate mental and physical well-being. A cancer diagnosis brings constant mental challenges, fear, anxiety and uncertainty that affect your entire being. Caring for my whole health means addressing my mental state with the same urgency as my physical one.”

Misunderstandings about mental health

“The most hurtful misunderstanding is the idea that a mental health condition is a sign of weakness. The truth is the opposite--seeking help is an act of profound strength. My sister has lived with depression since we were children and back then, my family did not know how to talk about it. That silence left her to navigate it alone. Now I know depression isn’t a choice or a failing; it is a health condition plain and simple.”

Why she is walking with Team MBC

“My mother-in-law, one of the founding Directors of the Mel Bornstein Clinic, has poured her heart into making mental health services accessible to all. Her passion inspired me to join her this year. For me, walking this race is also a personal milestone. For too long, I let my cancer diagnosis tell me what I couldn’t do. Training for this is a way of reclaiming my strength and the irony is not lost on me—I am walking with the MBC team as a person living with MBC: Metastatic Breast Cancer. When the universe sends you a message that clear, you answer the call.”

Go-to training song: “Stop Making This Hurt” by Bleachers (infectious beat but it is the lyrics that really resonate with me).

Post-walk treat: A cold protein shake, Boba Tea Protein or a yogurt parfait loaded with fruit and granola.

We are deeply grateful to Susan for sharing her story and for walking with our team to raise awareness about the importance of mental health.

Why mental health matters:
“To me, mental health is about understanding yourself as fully as possible and having access to our wide range of complicated thoughts and emotions. None of us can escape emotional pain and suffering and being able to sort through this with a therapist can be of tremendous value.”
Why access to mental health care is important:
“Mental health is an essential component for a good quality of life regardless of socioeconomic status or background. Access to mental health care is as important as how society offers access to education or physical health care”.

Go-to pump up song: “Geeked Up” by Jeezy

Post run ritual: Chocolate Fairlife protein shake

President and Founder of Team Continue, Rob is dedicated to removing barriers for people struggling with suicidal ideation to get the therapy they need. His passion for mental health aligns closely with our mission of breaking down financial and social barriers.

“Mental health is a fundamental part of a person’s well-being: mind, body and spirit. It’s the most commonly overlooked aspect of health, and stigma too often keeps people from addressing it. Seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.”
