Today, we honor the men and women who have served our country, and we’re proud to celebrate the veterans who are part of our LIFE, Inc. family. 🇺🇸

This year, our team joined the Veterans Day Parade with gratitude and pride. We’re especially thankful for the veterans who work for us and give back by helping others live more independently.

To every veteran in our community: thank you for your service, your courage, and your continued commitment to making a difference.

📞 If you or a loved one is a veteran needing support with independent living, our Veteran Directed Care program is here to help—call (573) 756-4314 to learn more.

This is the second full week of November which has been designated as National Epilepsy Awareness Month. In this post, the LIFE INC- Center for Independent Living will provide a few more facts from the Epilepsy Foundation of America so you can become more aware of how those who have epilepsy, face concerns of acceptance, and deal with something known as “felt” stigma. First, a Stigma is defined as "a mark of disgrace due to a circumstance or situation". “Felt” stigma is an internal shame and fear an epileptic has of being discriminated against due to their condition, even if that discrimination hasn't happened yet.
Seizures are a symptom of epilepsy. Not all seizures are the same. Many people with epilepsy have more than one type of seizure. Medication, other treatments, and sometimes surgery are available to help control seizures.
Misunderstanding and misinformation about seizures contribute to continued feelings of stigmatization and negative outcomes for individuals with epilepsy.
As stated before, Epilepsy is a hidden disability and until a person with epilepsy has a seizure, you wouldn’t even know it.
For more information on epilepsy please visit the Epilepsy Foundation of America.

So, most of you know we have been on this corner for over 104 years – yep that’s right,104! We have been serving our neighborhood, the surrounding metro area and quite frankly people from all over the world for all those years. We pride ourselves on hiring a staff that is very diverse and welcome everyone that walks through our doors.

But right now, our small business needs your support. We have been missing those crowds lately and want everyone to know that it's small businesses that keep neighborhoods like ours strong. When people gather at our doors, they meet people they never expected to. And in almost every case, find that we all have stuff in common. No matter who we are.

We are not here to push a political agenda, but rather to bring people together for the common good – the love of bacon, ice cream and chocolate. It doesn’t get much better than that. And if we can bridge a few gaps along the way, then we have done our small part to help make the world a better place.

We love our little corner of Old North St. Louis and want you to come down and see us! It’s going be a great weekend, so get out and enjoy some Crown Candy Kitchen!!

These are another one of the things that we do. You might think we are harping on this, but did you know that LIFE INC- Center for Independent Living provides free Medicare enrollment counseling every year during open enrollment? Our Medicare Certified Counselors can review your Medicare Part D and Advantage Plans to verify the providers are not making any changes that you may have missed or are not aware of. This free service is offered to help you from facing increases in medicine prices that could cost you a fortune over the next year. If you miss making changes during re-enrollment, your current policy stays in place regardless of any changes the provider has made.
The two smart cookies below are in the know. If you have received help from one of our counselors this year or in years past, please share your experience in the comments.

I never knew about SUDEP until my 27-year-old son, Nicholas, passed away in April 2024. He had epilepsy for 10 years prior to his passing. He passed away in his bedroom during the night and was found by me the next morning. I still can't believe it and we're still very much grieving Nick's death. It was so sudden and unexpected. We've educated ourselves by reading up on SUDEP. I want to tell people about SUDEP to help prevent further deaths from it.

Our Story

In 1997, the LIFE Center (formally named L.I.F.E., Inc.) for Independent Living opened its doors with the goal of serving seniors as well as individuals with disabilities, regardless their age, in the Greater Parkland area of southeast Missouri.

“There’s no place like home,” is the mantra of the LIFE Center for Independent Living. At the Life Center, we are all about providing empowerment. We supply options.

Our greatest resource…our staff. Each member of our team is hand-picked with varied backgrounds to produce a unique product…exceptional, heart-felt support and advocacy. Over 51% of our governing board, management, and staff is comprised of individuals with disabilities which springs from the persuasion that people with disabilities understand how best to meet the needs of others with disabilities. This factor also creates a blend of sensitivity and understanding in the entire team.

The bottom line…we care about YOU!
